I'll be back in CT when we shut everything down Monday at 8:00PM. I've been dining in and watching movies when I've not been hiking from our timeshare. Our week and with no restaurants and stores open, Ragged was open Tuesday, no one else wanted to come up. While trail traffic and the streets of North Conway have been lightly traveled, their are plenty of tourist still here. After Friday's wet start, I went to the Nature Conservancy's property in the Green Hills Preserve & did the two mile Pudding Pond loop. When I got back, there were several cars there, mine from CT, one from RI, one from NY, one from ME and three from NH.
Oddly, both NY & CT's Governors have said that outdoor solo recreation, like running, walking and hiking are fine. They actually said "hiking", locally, was fine. (is Gov. Cuomo a 46er? I'm confident Gov. Lamont is just copying what NY did.) Now, many of us here hike solo and are as comfortable in the Whites as we are locally. (It took my son being in scouts for me to even come close to knowing as much about CT trails as I do about the Whites. I've only been on Monadnock and Greylock more than I have on Pierce) One could see where walking along roads where drivers are not used to seeing pedestrians may be more hazardous. (Someone who drives on the main road that my street is off has a drinking problem. In one 300 foot area near a small pond, there were (at last count) 40 1/2 pint and pint vodka bottles thrown down the embankment. They are about equally split between 80 and 100 proof)
I'm fortunate that I have hiking in town and state parks in my town. Are the Coos County Medical resources stressed? They aren't treating skiers and snowmobilers', their standard winter trauma cases. (In February, I got to see how many people the Pat's Peak first aid crew sends to Concord on a Saturday night. I have to think a typical weekend at the NH resorts has each of them sending 4-8 from each resort.) In NYC, New Rochelle and SF, the urban and suburban health care facilities are under stress. Is Gorham? If they are not, are their medical professionals being sent out of state?
Large Meet up groups and Facebook groups should be avoided. Some people would argue solo hiking is irresponsible. (not me) I'll be haunting the woods in my town starting Monday. On 3/21/2020 there were at least two dozen people on Kearsarge North, mostly couples and a couple of young families. Some with gear that was overmatched for the conditions or without any traction at all. Where they are from wasn't really relevant, being prepared was more important.
Keeping those with underlying health conditions and Senior homes safe is important, keeping it out of Senior homes is important as once it gets in like it did in WA, it spreads quickly. Sheltering in the elderly is crucial as healthy young people could have it and not really think anything is wrong. Or tell anyone as parents of teenagers can attest. Seeing their grandparents could be fatal to them though.
