I left Boston about 5:00 AM, with the sun rising. The further north I drove, the darker it got. By 7:45, when I got to Crawford Depot, it was raining. I met up with Peakn, and by 8:40 we were on the Avalon Trail, heading up. The first two stream crossings on Avalon were tricky, fortunately the boots were waterproof. On to the A-Z, which was fine up to the Mt. Tom spur. I went up to Tom, as Peakn had already been there. No views at the top, completely fogged in. Looking around, it must have been some storm that caused the blow down in the summit area, I'm just glad I wasn't there for it.
The Willey Range trail was in good shape, no blowdowns, just wet. In some places there was water running down the trail, in others, huge puddles that we waded through or tried to 'whack around. There were several gray jays on the summit of Field, again no views, so we headed over to Willey. The sun almost came out about the summit of Willey, but not quite. Back to Field and down the Avalon Trail, which was very wet and slippery. It seemed to take forever to get down, as we were being very careful not to wipe out. We finished in about 9 hours, which is OK considering the footing. It was also the first time out this year for both of us.
