OK What about Moosilauke

I heard final e silent or final e pronounced were both correct.

The AMC White Mountain Trail guide says that there is some disagreement amongst locals on the pronunciation of that one. Personally, I just like to say "Moos a law kee". Its just more fun to roll it off the tongue.

Kinda like "Wheat-a-moo" it is just a great sounding word. I say it whenever I can. Wheat-a-moo, Wheat-a-moo, Wheat-a-moo. See?

Maps from the 1800's had it listed as "Moose-Hillock" so you can guess how they pronounced it back then. The original Abenaki pronounciation was probably something resembling the long E version, like Asquamchumaukee. Nearly all the Dartmouth folks pronounce it with a silent E except when singing the song "My Moosilaukee Sweetheart" which doesn't scan right without the long E at the end.

Only 1 is correct. :D

Moosilauke is a contraction of the Indian words Moosi (bald) and auke (a place). Auke is pronounced Awk as in Auke Bay, Ak. It seems pretty obvious to me the intended pronunciation is MOO-si-lawk.

If you're still having trouble with it, try this link.

and another link.

I guess all of my pronounciations are wrong. :D
I say while-ee, moo-si-law-kee, and gee-oat.

I love the Adirondack ones too.

I never heard any one talk about the names so I had my own versions.

Al-gon-quin was Al-o-quin for some reason to me.

Santanoni and Couchsachraga can still be a mystery to me at times. I can always say Panther, Santa and Couchie. I am a big Couchie potato fan.

I’m pretty sure Santanoni is pronounced as it’s spelled: san-ta-NO-nee, with the ‘‘nee’’ pronounced like knee as in ‘‘ow, I hurt my knee,’’ not like née as in Marge Simpson née Bouvier, which is pronounced like ‘‘neigh,’’ as in ‘‘Frau Blucher’’/‘‘Neigh!’’

Couchsachraga is pronounced kook-sa-KRA-ga. Couchee is supposed to be the preferred spelling for its nickname, pronounced KOO-chee, as Charo used to say. Probably still does.

how do you pronounce it??

How about "Tripoli"--Is it Trip-o-lie
or
Trip-o-lee

I always say Trip-o-lie

Triple-eye...the Forest rangers have corrected me a couple of times on that one.
