Winter nh 48 canine finishers

I talked with Eric Savage about the issue and here's what he told me. When Kevin Rooney made the application for Brutus it was the first time that such an application had been made and it caught the committee by surprise and they gave Brutus the certificate. However, after reflecting on the issue it was decided that for some breeds it would be too dangerous and they: 1, didn't want encourage anything dangerous and 2 could not get into the issue of deciding which breeds could do it and which couldn't (which is totally understandable), so they decided that no further certificates would be given to dogs for the winter 48. Therefore, Brutus was the first, last and only dog to receive the certificate.

What we have found in compiling the list is that winter hikers are extremely savvy hikers who know conditions and are extremely careful with their dogs making sure they don't put them at any risk. Case in point Bob and Gerry's 'Dusty' who has been carefully taken through the summits over and extended period of time and has only has one to go to become the smallest dog ever to complete the W48.

I would maintain, in fact, that many dogs are more at risk in the summer with some hikers who don't understand the dangers of heat and dehydration.

How many bloody paw prints have you seen in the Northern Presidentials? I've seen them on several occasions.

Winter is here. I thought I would bump this up. Keep in mind that we want to know if there are any canine winter 48 finishers this years. I know there are some like Dusty who are poised for the finish.

I just received an E-mail from Donna Dearborn concerning her dog Ella who finished the winter 48 on Mt Eisenhower on 2/16/2011. Below are two photos of Ella taken on West Bond the following year. We just received word that Kali along with Heather, of course, has just finished another winter 48 round. Heather, please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this is Kali's third winter round. Congratulations to both of you.

Dusty was joined by his hiking buddy Max today as he completed his Winter NH48 list

At @ 11 AM this morning Dusty touched the summit of Mt WAshington. What an incredible journey this little guy has had - coming from a kill shelter in VA to being to hiking the 48 4000 foot peaks in NH in the Winter.

Congratulations to Dusty and Thor. As far as I know Dusty is the smallest dog to complete the 48 winter. It would have been interesting to have gotten a picture of Dusty and Brutus together. I'll update the list as soon as I hear from Dave and Thor.

It's now official, we had three canine finishers yesterday on three adjacent peaks: Adams, Jefferson and Washington. Congratulations to Harley, Thor and Dusty. Here is the new list. Because of the near simultaneous finish of the three dogs I'm not sure of the exact order if it matters. We can make adjustments but here is the list as it stands now.

FYI - Kali finished her 11th round this weekend during a full Presidential Traverse and is on track to be dog #2 (after Pepper) to finish the grid.
