Most people hike Moriah in winter via Stoney Brook and I've read that is in part due to the parking at the Carter-Moriah TH being problematic. I'm wondering if anyone on VFTT has checked it out recently as I would like to head up that way next weekend, partly so I can bag Surprise along the way. My car is a sedan with not particularly high clearance.

thanks

I haven't hiked from that trailhead in the winter (Carter-Moriah), but I don't think it's so much an issue of clearance as it is an issue of finding room to park - it's a flat residential street, so I assume it's plowed like any other neighborhood. Perhaps you could bring a shovel and clear out a space near the power lines (about a minute walk from the trailhead).

"On Foot" Directions

You could find some street-parking in Gorham, and then follow the directions given in the WMG for getting to the trailhead “on foot” (See WMG directions below). A map relating to the below directions is HERE.
On foot from Gorham, follow the road that leaves the east side of NH 16 just south of the railroad tracks. Bear right in 0.1 mi. on Mill St., and in 0.1 mi. a path left leads across the Peabody River on a footbridge. Turn right here and follow the road to its end, where the trail enters the woods on the left.

The trailhead is at the end of a residential street (my nieces used to live on it). It isn't a huge cul-de-sac. I've never had a problem heading from there in the winter before, but I haven't been up there in a few years, and they may be dumping the snow there.

I haven't been there this winter but have many times in years past. I always park under power lines - more room, doesn't seem like you're in the locals way.

I prefer this route - lots of PUD's, but overall about the effort as SB. Better views, IMHO.
