My Elph is the Powershot S230, the 3 megapixel version with 2x optical zoom.

The current "camera of choice" seems to be the S400, the 4 megapixel version.

Both are a silver metallic case, and are not water-resistant. I'm not familiar with the one you're referring to. I know that Canon makes a film, not digital, waterproof "Sport Elph" that has the rounded shape.

I just bought an S400 to replace my S110, which died right after my Moriah hike a few months ago. Awesome gadget! Funny -- I paid about $150 less for it than I did for the S110, which was the first Elpf and un-negotiable at the time.

It would've cost me $25 more to buy the S230 than it cost me for the S400 on Amazon. Weird?

thanx MichaelJ, seems your right that the waterproof one is a film ,not digital , I will look into the others you suggested, thanx, Mike D.

I have a little tri pod for my ciber-shot that I got from Camp-mor last year, it only weighs a few ounces and is about 4"long. The best thing about it is it has a piece of velcro strap on attatched to it that can go aroun trees. Comes in handy to get everybody in the shot. Boots :D

Ohhhh yeah! Titanium!
And my coolest new gadget is a Titanium dive knife attached to my kayakPFD with a stainless steel retractor. No rusty knife!!

Now..where can I get a submersible DVD player?:D

My Garmin Forerunner...I can set the pace and see if I am staying ahead of the little "cyber hiker." Hey SherpaK...if you want to add some more weight to your pack, I see Campmoor has a "Tent Fan" in their latest catalog! :D

Gadget?

Don't know if this qualifies as a gadget, and somebody has probably done something similar, but I tried this for the first time for a hike on the Indian Head section of the DP.

I took the Trail Conference map that includes the loop I planned on doing, copied it at 200%, placing the loop in the center of a 5" x 7" area. I then printed the trail description on the other side of the same area (it was my first time on this trail), cut out the 5" x 7" piece, took it to Kinko's and had it laminated. I then punched a hole in one corner and hung it on one of those little spring-loaded reels I use on my fishing vest and clipped it to the sternum strap on my pack.

True, it doesn't show much beyond the loop itself, limiting its usefulness in identifying features in the distance, so I also brought along the original Trail Conference map, but never took it out of my pack, as most of the peaks visible from the outlooks on that part of the DP are pretty easy to identify.

fav piece of gear

All you gearheads are soooo hi-tech, that I hate to admit that my fav piece of gear is my low-tech candle lantern. But I mostly leave it at home since I hike until sundown and then sleep until dawn. Hanging at camp is not that great unless I am catching up on my ZZZZZ's.

Happy Trails;)
