    favorite campgrounds in NH/ME

Ditto.........Cathedral of the Pines in Eustis, ME. In addition, I would include Mt. Blue State Park in Weld ME....well maintained and clean, with great hiking right there (Tumbledown Mt. and Mt. Blue)

Did anyone else donate at least 1/5 of their blood to black flies this weekend?

Same deal on the Webster-Jackson Trail !! It was my second time in Crawford Notch in the last month and not one black fly !!

    Backpacking the Bigelows June 25-26

Yeah.....I'll take the self-serve at the Woodsman over the Elvis-motif at the Mainely Yours ! ;)

    Backpacking the Bigelows June 25-26

Thanks for the heads up....I'm going to be heading up to my place in a couple of weeks to do some mountain biking and hiking ! I agree that Rte 4 is a pain.....the mileage is shorter, but a lot less highway driving, which I find tougher on my aging eyes at night. FYI, one shortcut going that way...

    Backpacking the Bigelows June 25-26

Actually, the locals call it the Sleeping Indian...and you can see it's almost perfect outline from the top of Sugarloaf. The Bigelow Range is probably my favorite hike. I enjoy the remoteness, lack of crowds and the views are specatcular...I love it on a clear day when you can see both Katahdin...

How Do You Keep In Shape For Hiking?

I used to be a competitive cyclist, but after a few years of it, the fun wore off and it became like my "second job" (wasn't good enough at it to quite my day job ! ;) )...monitoring heart rates, training zones and keeping a log became a chore, as well as worrying about how many miles I didn't...

    Best dog breeds for hiking?

I think this is good advice for anyone considering any of the sporting breeds as a family companion and hiking partner. A lot of folks really don't understand how much energy a "field bred" dog needs to burn off.......good hunting dogs are bred to run all day in the field. My advice is to...

    Best dog breeds for hiking?

Ok, I'm bias, but I think Labrador Retrievers are the best. My yellow lab, Sadie is about 15 months old and she just bagged her first two 4k footers with me in Crawford Notch a couple of weeks ago....as with all dogs you have to keep them hydrated, but she kept up fine (better shape than me at...

Suggestions for a White Mountain Moron

Frankly, if you're heading over to Maine, you might want to consider some hiking in the Western Mountains. There are certainly enough 4k footers (Sugarloaf, Bigelow Range, the Crockers etc.) to keep you challenged for a few days and it will be a lot less crowded than NH. The Bigelows have some...

What do you pack for a five hour summer day hike ?...

As I've gotten into hiking more, I've read, what appears to be some conflicting information about what gear to carry, for example on a typical day hike. I always feel like I carry too much stuff I never use. There seems to be the minimalist school of thought that passionately supports carrying...

    Car break ins

Heard the same story at Mizpah on Saturday from one of the people working there. Its certainly disturbing.....people that live/work in metropolitan areas view hiking in WMNF as an escape from all this kind of crap !!

    black fly with head net?

I just posted this in the Q&A forum, but I guess it could go here, as well: Not that I'm complaining !! I figured that this weekend would have been prime time, but I spent Saturday hiking in Crawford Notch and did not see one black fly. I was prepared for the worst...long pants, long sleeve...

Where are the black flies ?

Not that I'm complaining !! I figured that this weekend would have been prime time, but I spent Saturday hiking in Crawford Notch and did not see one black fly. I was prepared for the worst...long pants, long sleeve shirt, headnet and 100% deet, but didn't need any of it. Is there something...

what is your favorite water filter?

I bought a Katadyn Hiker Pro at this year's REI sale (20% off with my member coupon)...used it once on a Bigelow Range hike a few weeks ago and it worked great,

In need of anti-fogger suggestions for eye wear

I use Rain-X on my cars and I've often wondered if it would work on my glasses amd ski goggles, but I've been afraid to try it because I was worried about damaging my $400 bifocals and $120 ski goggles....I now might give it a try ! People that don't wear glasses don't realize how frustrating...

    Dumb question re: tentsites

I know a lot of are going to think I'm an idiot, but I'm new to this so here goes. I've noticed wooden tent platforms during some of my hikes and I'm wondering how you set your tent up on one of these ? What do you do with the stakes? Is my tent just old and I'm missing some technological...

Saddlebacks, Abe, Spaulding & Sugarloaf May 28-30

I'm not sure about the Carrabassett Valley Rd -- I don't have my DeLorme with me right now... but maybe someone else can answer that. No....its definately a different road. Caribou Pond Road is about a half a mile north of the Sugarloaf access road on the left. If I'm not mistaken...

Western Maine Mtns - Memorial Day Weekend

I've thinking about hiking with my 1 year old yellow lab. I'm curious how your dog does in the Bigelows....can he/she handle the Firewarden's Trail etc. ?
