Advice sought on Isolation with bushwhacks

If the cold weather holds out a bit longer, I'd like to take the pups for a snowshoe trek into Isolation, following the bushwhack route(s). Could some kind person give me a somewhat detailed description of the route? GPS coordinates perhaps? Maybe even share a shapefile of the track...

    Fill in your divots!

You make a good point. I am often tempted to leave my snowshoes behind when there is a nice morning crust. I carry them anyhow, and remind myself that weight-bearing exercise helps to prevent osteoporosis.

    Liberty and Flume 3/20/2011

I'm surprised you saw so few people. Lafayette was more or less mobbed, and the Ridge to Lincoln and Little Haystack saw a number of hikers as well. What a day to be in the mountains!

    Fill in your divots!

I am glad that New England does not have the strict rules on wearing snowshoes in winter that exist in the Adirondacks. It is nice that we are given the discretion to wear on our feet what is appropriate for the conditions of the particular day and path, without a blanket provision for the...

    Lafayette and Lincoln loop 3/20/2011

Date: Sunday, March 20, 2011 Trails: Old Bridle Path, Franconia Ridge Trail, Falling Waters Trail Conditions: Lower sections were well-tracked and bare-bootable. Somewhat icy above. Some bare rock on the ridge. Brook crossings were all easy; but could be more difficult as soon as there...

    52 With A View...or no more views?

Starr King not so bad in winter. I got this shot from a point along the trail just a bit to the east of the true summit. Maybe not great; but O.K., I think. Perhaps worth a 2.5 rating rather than 3? View southeast from Starr King Summit by Elizabeth W.K., on Flickr

Best spots to find Gray Jays

I would add Avalon to the list. I've also had them come to me on already-mentioned peaks: Jackson, Webster, and Starr King. I've noticed the jays will not eat out of my hand if the dogs are at my feet. I have to get the dogs to go ahead on the trail if I want to feed the jays. Here is one...

    The Positives of Winter Hiking

Ah, but it doesn't stick to the fur and give off quite the same redolence if it is frozen. My dogs love finding and eating frozen dead animal parts in winter, and I don't worry as much about their treasures being rotten and making them sick. Lucky Find by Elizabeth W.K., on Flickr

    Choosing BC Skis

Thanks. Yes, they are the Kodiaks. They have served me very well for many years. And you are right that on the flats they were better than the telemark skis. Twenty-five years ago on the Catamount Trail (~300 miles) I alternated between the Kodiaks and a pair of shorter, wooden child's skis...

    The Positives of Winter Hiking

Stinky stuff that the dogs like to roll in is either covered by snow or frozen solid.

    Choosing BC Skis

This past weekend I skied the back side of Wildcat (NH) using my 25-year-old Karhus with a half metal edge (half = middle of the ski) and a three-pin binding. They worked just fine for most of the trip. There were just a few places - particularly the untracked glades - where I was feeling...

    Groundhog's Day Storm, 2011

We got about 8-9" of light snow in Lyme, NH. No sleet. And now the sun is out. I think it is time to abandon the computer and get outside to enjoy it!

    winter dog jacket?

Thanks, Ed. Though I have to admit that the large arm holes do let some snow in. So far since Salty's surgery we have been just doing relatively short hikes, so it has not really been an issue. Some of the jackets others have mentioned appear to have sleeves attached, which might work better...

    winter dog jacket?

Home made Salty had his belly shaved for surgery. Most of the dog coats I found online do not cover the belly, so I made one out of an old fleece vest of mine. It was not only cheaper than buying a new one; but also form-fitted to his size. I cut the fabric and doubled it over to make it...

Cardigan via West Ridge Trail, 1/1/11

Trail well-packed-out. Quite icy and slippery, and with some deep slush pockets. Upper part on the exposed summit rocks was actually relatively easy and mostly free of ice and snow. Summit was lovely and mild on New Year's Day. Equipment: Our group just used poles for aid in balance, and...

    Gloves

I have dozens of pairs of work gloves where the left-hand glove is in perfect shape, and the right handed glove is completely worn out and full of holes. It would be great if glove manufacturers would sell gloves in sets of three - a left and two rights. Or maybe there could be a social...

    Winter Hiking Boots Recommendations

I adore my Salomons. I think they are the "Snowtrip" variety (black with red details). Not plastic, but very warm, waterproof, and they seem to work just fine with crampons. Have so far held up very well with fairly frequent winter use, including about 20 of the NH 4,000 footers. The specs...
