What size backpack for 8 Days of Food and Equipment?

In general, 5000 cubic inches is a good average size. Some go smaller, some need more room. I've got a big 5000 or more (not sure) Lowe Alpine or I can make do with my dinky daypack (2500-3000). Personally, I would never buy anything under 4000 with the sole purpose of week-long trips...

    Weather website question

Alright, this is killing me. I've been searching all of the stadard weather sites, doing all kinds of searches and generally going crazy trying to find out if there is any snow in Wawa, Candada. Does anyone know of weather websites that tell you how much snow is on the ground? Is there such a...

Washington Post: Two Timber Firms Pretending To Be 'Green,' Groups Allege

Interesting, thanks for the heads up. Plum Creek recently purchased most of Mead Westvaco's timber lands here in MI. I noticed the change while looking at a platt book a couple weeks ago. Mead did a good job up here, I wonder what this new company may have in store....

    stove pumps and odd pots

I guess I overlooked the big "Sigg Tourist" imprint on the side of the frying pan... So, seriously, if anyone wants the thing I'll send it to you. Going, once, going twice, gonna sell it on eBay if nobody here wants it.

    stove pumps and odd pots

The cookset if you have the Svea stove it goes with. :) I need more pots like I need a hole in the head. Thanks for the input on the pumps. I could have sworn I heard that the size of the nozzle where you "plug in" the fuel line was a different size on each. Maybe it was something else...

    stove pumps and odd pots

I've got a few questions which I'm sure someone can answer for me. 1st, will the pump from a whisperlite international work with a regular whisperlite stove? I seem to recall hearing that it wouldn't, but now I can't remember. I'd like to take the int. pump as a backup on a twelve day trip at...

Everest: Beyond the Limit. Discussion Note ***WITH SPOILERS***

One of the big things that struck me about the last couple episodes was how relatively easy it all looked. Yeah sure there were huge drop offs beside the route and the wind was blowing etc. etc. The video footage, unfortunately, does not convey how difficult it must be up there. Where Tim was...

    Winter Camping Questions

Yeah, getting up at night to pee does suck, but dehydration can make you more suseptable to hypothermia. Your body needs that liquid to help regulate temperature. It's common to not feel hungry or thirsty in the cold too, I beleive the body shuts down some of those sensors when the temp drops...

    Winter Camping Questions

Agreed about the propane. I took a propane lantern on a rather mild trip a few winters ago (20s-30s) and it never worked. I tried putting it in my parka and then taping hand warmers to the bottle, not a thing. Waste of weight and space. Candles are the way to go for light (and warmth in a...

    Winter Camping Questions

Spend 11 bucks on this book and you'll learn more than you could learn if this thread was 10 pages long. The first 50 pages is about cold related injuries, heat loss, stoves, skiis and food. The last 50 pages is just camping. This is one of my favorite books.

    Dehydrating eggs?

I've dehydrated scrambled eggs before and it's awful. I don't reccomend it AT ALL. After 2 hours in a pan of water they were still hard nuggets that looked like popcorn. I've never had powdered eggs, but would like to try them. With some cheese and other stuff they can't be too bad...

    downhill to XC ski conversion

Yeah, I was worried about that. Most of my projects wind up that way   . Guess I'll hold off, it was fun to think about anyway.

    downhill to XC ski conversion

Anybody ever convert a pair of downhill skiis to cross country? I've got a pair of xc skiis but I'd rather have backcountry. While browsing at Goodwill the other day and seeing that you can buy a pair of old downhills for about 5 bucks I had the idea to convert a pair. I suppose I could just...

    don't fear orange!

Nobody has special rights to the forest (except maybe native americans? ). I was just implying that because hunting season is short (apparently shorter here than there) it's not unreasonable to compromise. I draw the distinction between bow and rifle season because 1- bow season is...

    don't fear orange!

I don't think it's meant to encourage them to drink while they hunt, but just to buy it cause it's camo (I know I often buy beer based on outdoor packaging/names). Most hunters don't drink while they hunt, that's just dumb. Besides probably not being adventagous to actually shooting deer (think...

    don't fear orange!

Orange gaitors??! That's why they were staring! Seriously, I'd stare! Kinda overboard don't you think? What I don't understand is why everyone seems to be so anti-hunter. Not many have said it in so many words here, but it's been implied. Most of you eat meat don't you? So why the...

    Need Advice/Feedback on Wilderness Training

I've heard the REI map & compass clinics are pretty basic. I guess it kinda depends on how you learn best, but I think many would agree that reading a book on it and then getting out and doing it is the best way to learn.
