Would it happen in NH? S&R tells someone to hunker down for the night

I saw this and almost posted it but peakbagger beat me to it. It made perfect sense to me, and I wouldn't be surprised if we start to see more of this in the future. Discomfort is not equivalent to danger, and I don't believe there is an inherent "right to be rescued" other than a moral...

    Reckless Hikers Pay "Penalty"

I had the same reaction. Hikers? These guys are not "hikers." I thought at first that maybe they were rock climbers, but no they were not that either. I liked "free ascensionists." Whatever label applies, they were certainly "reckless" and indisputably clueless and probably should just stay home...

    Biggest Little Mt

Thanks Mike P. CIDP is considered an auto-immune disorder. Your immune system malfunctions and attacks healthy tissue. Your wife's condition is like nothing I've ever heard of before. Truly idiosyncratic. I'm pleased to hear that she's doing well and adapted. With regard to PT, that's a good...

Thanks ChrisB. I love your avatar and location. I am trying to avoid the spot on that sign.

    Biggest Little Mt

The White Mts of NH have always been a special place for me, an almost spiritual retreat where I can relax and breathe and get in tune with the natural world. During my long weekend, I did two other easier hikes, canoed and swam in cool clear waters and observed a perching bald eagle, a hunting...

    Biggest Little Mt

I made it back to NH for my annual visit last week and climbed a little mountain, but I have to back up to tell the whole story. I thought I was taking it easy last year when I did just 3 hikes and climbed 4 peaks, the highest of which was Smarts Mt, a very enjoyable round trip on Lambert Ridge...

    Wildcats and Great Gulf Wilderness

Nice video as always Seth. (You do realize that some people will now think they can do this loop in 17 minutes!) It brought back memories of a Wildcat traverse in the same direction some 15 years ago. We caught a brief thunderstorm up on the ridge and then got soaked in a downpour on the way...

    Hiker dies on Jewell Trail.

You are wise to wait for a cooler day for the Baldfaces. I did that hike on a hot summer day a few years ago and while I loved that loop, there is a lot of exposure on a sunny day. I got fried even though I was wearing a Foreign Legion hat to protect my neck as well as copious sunscreen. Went...

Sleeping in cars allowed at Lafayette Place?

I think at 20 years you get the golden compass.

Lidar Article with comments about the AMC 4K list

I've always been a fan of Guyot which is hardly a cheap peak to obtain. Perhaps its reputation has suffered somewhat because of its ill-defined double summit and its proximity to the more imposing Bonds. Seems like a no-brainer to switch it out for South Hancock which has long been questioned...

Blueberry Mt? Just a wild guess.

Hiker Rescue yesterday on Washington (Mt Clay)

I was on Jefferson in August of 1986, having summited earlier in the day and camping at The Perch when a freak storm blew up. Expecting summer conditions, and not totally prepared, we were just warm enough to get through the night. We were supposed to do Adams and Madison the next day but...

Dog: 1; Spencer: 0 (WARNING! GRAPHIC!)

Wow! He took quite a chunk out of your leg. I hope you're healing up ok with no infection. Maybe you better take your big brother with you next time for protection.

Here's a list I don't think exists: Mountains whose summit is a giant boulder

Snow or no snow, equals total thread drift. "Seen my pretty Alice in every headlight. Alice, Dallas Alice."

Here's a list I don't think exists: Mountains whose summit is a giant boulder

You are doing a Nuke Laloosh on that Little Feat quote my friend. It should read "stoved in" but then you don't credit Lowell George or Little Feat so maybe it's just your ripped-off version.

Mt. Success and the road to it.

It's a nice moderate hike and the views from The Outlook are the best. The road is notorious for potholes and washboard. Drive accordingly.

    Mt. Isolation Advice

While there is no "easy" way to reach Isolation, the Rocky Branch option, as many have suggested, is "easier." To experience Glen Boulder Trail and see the big rock for which it's named, the loop around the Gulf of Slides is a great hike. Starting at Pinkham Notch, take Tuckerman Ravine Trail...

Here's a list I don't think exists: Mountains whose summit is a giant boulder

Glen Boulder is quite impressive though not located on a summit per se. I used to have a good photo of it. Not sure where it went, but the boulder is still there.

The 52 with a view list

I loved the Baldface loop. I included Baldface Knob and Eagle Crag which are worthy destinations of their own. This is one of the top hikes in NH imo.

The 52 with a view list

I discovered the 52WAV list several years ago after completing the NH48 which I think took me 37 years. Of course, most of that time I lived about 1200 miles from NH, so I was at a disadvantage to you locals (to me, all of New England and eastern NY is "local" to NH). It's a great list that...
