    Are poles worth it?

I love them. I have the same BD's as TFR. I highly recommend the flick locks...my first pair were not and it was maddening trying to extend and collapse them!! I find that using poles saves lots of wear and tear on my knees, ankles, and hips on the downhills. Helps my posture on uphills...

Thanks so much for posting this. Brought tears to my eyes as well. Also brought me a much needed dose of perspective this morning.

What (or who) got you hiking?

When I was little my brother used to take me up on the hill behind our house. Then when I was older (10-11) I'd hike back there with my buddies, sometimes for overnighters, where we'd build a shelter (such as it was) and "rough it" for the night...sorta like the boys in Stephen King's "The...

why all the "Do Do Occurs" threads ?

Yup, I was thinking the same thing, Chip. Sorta like ambulance chasing after a bit. ...and even if it is a teachable moment, I'm not sure that it's anything more than an opportunity for people to show how smart we are.

    Westkill - 7/31

Ever since first passing the Diamond Notch Falls on the descent from West Hunter back in May, I've had it in my mind that I wanted to come back in the summer to hike West Kill and take advantage of the pool of cool water at the base of the falls on the way back to the car. We were so glad that...

    santanoni's and allen

Here's my Allen TR from June 16. Has been very little rain since then, so the crossings should be no problem. You'll see pics of both river crossings, with nothing more than knee deep. We wore Teva sandals from the trailhead, then changed into boots after the Hudson. Also wore the Tevas for...

I fought the grouse and the grouse won!

Had a similar experience on Allen last month...well, mine didn't charge, but like you I was ready with my treking poles as my first line of defense!

Prepping for Marcy: Whiteface and Passaconaway. July 9, 2011

Absolutely stop at Indian Falls! Fantastic views of the MacIntyre Range and Colden! And it's a great place to take off the boots and cool your feet, change socks, etc. Also good spot to pump water if you need to. June 30 the trail was relatively dry all the way. Boardwalk referred to above...

Caling ADK hikers. Need advice please!

The Ark Trail Inn in Upper Jay is an inexpensive, hiker-friendly motel. I've stayed there many times.

46er Finish on Skylight, June 30

Yup. We were there hiking Algonquin with some friends. They continued on to Iroquois and we went back to the cabin to get stuff ready for a little party. It seemed so strange to begin and end the hike with sun above the trees. :) What did you hike that day?
