Bodies of Alex Lowe and friend found on Shishapangma after 16 years

Interesting timing. Alex's friend, Conrad Ancor, and his son Max? are featured in the OMNI film celebrating the National Parks.

    Weekend Rescues

Does anyone know whether Garfield Guy was one of the tennis shoe club or had Microspikes? Certainly a well prepared hiker can slip and slide and get hurt. The Shinning Rock people - had they extended down the spur or were they found in that vicinity?

    EMS Going Bankrupt?

EMS was the first dedicated store I went into when they were in Boston back in the 60s. There was a poster on the back wall which happened to be a Dick Smith photo of a family hiking on the southern Presidentials, approaching Pierce. It was me and my family! I was so excited to see it that they...

    EMS Going Bankrupt?

I was just shopping for a bike rack for the back of my car. There were a few good options, including KTP because I worked for them last weekend. But when I checked for reviews to the product on Amazon, I saw that they had an out-of-box unit for greater than $50 off, much less than my discount...

    EMS Going Bankrupt?

I feel sad about this news, though I agree about the downhill part. They have been such an important part of my adult life.

2 seriously injured in two separate sliding falls on Mt Washington this weekend

I know I shouldn't say anything yet, but I've been waiting...this year is a tough one. The question I have is: was anyone sledding?

magnesium flare or meteor over 93 in Campton tonight ?

Last year we saw a candle lantern in flight around that area. A short while later, a Statey at a high rate of speed heading in that direction while we were traveling in the other.

And if you don't have a mentor, rent one (i.e. a guide who will teach you the various techniques). I'm frugal, self-sufficient, generally dislike guides (but for one or two I've met), but that's what I did and I'm glad of it.

I think that because there are fewer people out in winter that more of them will have high profiles in the world of experience. The man who died from a heart attack on Franconia Ridge a few weeks ago wasn't especially well known. "Kate" became well known but would not have been if she had not...

    Burnt Mountain

We were there last weekend in a house a group of us rented for a long weekend. Don't turn down Burnt Mountain Road, but do go one street up to Bigelow Mountain Road. However, there is no parking here. We were able to walk from our rental. At the end of Bigelow Mountain Road you pick up a multi...

That's an interesting question asked a bit earlier about how long he might have been there...has that been asked or answered? Had he removed any clothing as is not uncommon for hypothermia illness and death? (Thinking about the Monadnock Ranger who died off Twinway/Guyot a few years ago.)

Fatality on Little Haystack Saturday 2/13/16

Yes, because it is a very difficult thing to move them at all. Some have been pushed into a crack or off the edge, such as the Purple Princess.

They do Sky Burials with Bone Crushers in Tibet and the surrounding areas. I just finished reading the novel "The Abominable" by Dan Simmons (audio book, really; 24 cds of fascinating details on climbing in the mid 1920s) and the act was brutally and fascinatingly described. I had said when I...

I understand the expressions of people who say that's a nice way to die, but is it really? I hope someday that one of his friends (or the group) will let us know what the experience was like for them. I wouldn't want my friends/family to have to go through that with my remains. It's going to be...

LOST HIKER IN Spaulding mountain area maine.

This raises the question of why are they releasing this new information now. Why were they holding it back and what else are they holding back. Not that we all need to know everything. But what has made the change of what they are now saying. What has driven these new details out of the box?

Have you read "A Lady's Life in the Rockies" which talks about winter around Estes Park and her 1850s climb of Longs Peak? I recommend it.

    Frozen pack found in tree

Has anyone heard about this? It was posted on Facebook: "A backpack was found lodged in a tree on the North Branch of the Gale River. Its contents were frozen as if it had been in the water. It was found by a hiker who put up a post in the NETC named Audi."
