Thanks for the link. That certainly seems like an affordable option to give it a shot.

    Rain Shorts

I did get one of these $12.99 Frogg Toggs ponchos and it seems plenty big to go over a backpack while wearing. I'm pretty sure it is not going to breath well though so I think it'd definitely be for hiking in continuous, soaking rains where you're just trying to stay warm and avoid wetting out...

Is there a missing hyperlink in this post? I don't see the kilt. Or did you mean the ZPacks one previously mentioned is also what you use.

    Burgeon Outdoor Brand

I'm 6'3" so that length might be welcome in my case. I'll say this though: they send A LOT of promotional emails. Like 3-4 a day. I get they are small and promotion is necessary to grow but I never like that level of solicitation. Their stuff seems very expensive as well, although the...

    Wild River Road Status

I've done West Royce via Burnt Mill Brook and LOVE that summit area! All the moss and carpeted pathways are tremendously scenic. I think this is my favorite way up that ridge although the Basin Trail is also very nice. I've never done East Royce. East Royce looks like a steep climb (I think...

    Wild River Road Status

That would be appreciated. I'd take the Highwater Trail but areas of that are so messed up that I figured walking the road, even if it is messed up, would be faster. You can't lose the road...(or at least I hope it's not that bad! :p)

At what point does it become enabling?

It is just sad how uninformed, clueless and easily defeated we have become as a society. All we want is the highs, the rewards and the experience with none of the effort, work and responsibility. :(

    Wild River Road Status

I know Wild River Road has been closed, likely for the season, but I was curious if anyone had any updates on it. TrailsNH and the USFS page don't seem to have anything beyond the initial closure (11/21/23 and 3/22/24 respectively). >Has anyone visited the area? Is it gated right at Rte 113 or...

Lydia finishes the 4K list - 4 years old editted

This ^. You absolutely nailed it. There are amazing personal stories associated with these lists. The story is the achievement, not the checkmarks or the patches. I immediately thought of the woman not so long ago who finished the list in honor of her son who died right after they started the 4k...

    Magalloway

Facebook alone uses about 12 terawatt hours of electricity a year and 4 million cubic meters of water to cool its datacenters. We have bigger environmental fish to fry then a car ride to Magalloway. We propbably released more carbon talking about it here online than the actual driving....

Lydia finishes the 4K list - 4 years old editted

I think you nailed it when you ask if it is the goal of the child or the parent. I think it is definitely the parent's goal, using the opportunity to brag on social media in the age of "look at me". Let's face it. The kid is probably getting carried a lot, doesn't carry gear, etc. So exactly...

    Burgeon Outdoor Brand

I've been scouring the "web" of late looking to tweak a few things in my gear and came across a NH company called Burgeon Outdoors. Sounded like a solid company with good ties to NH, etc, which I always like but it looks like it was just founded in 2019. Anyone familiar with the company and/or...

    Carter Dome Rainbow Trail Camp/Water

I don't recall any water sources up there either. Unless there are puddles and run off from recent rains I think you'll be packing it up. And I'm not positive but I'm pretty sure the summit is in a restricted use area so any tent sites would not be "official" if that is a concern.

New List - Maine High Peaks Scenic Seven

Abraham is my only non-Baxter hike. Did last November with about 6 inches of fresh, untracked snow on it. Was a really nice peak. Bigelow and Saddleback have been high on my list for awhile now. As far as the "7" I'd probably do in combination with kayaking on a camping trip with the wife (non...

    Carter Dome Rainbow Trail Camp/Water

It has been several years since I last did that trail but I recall the woods there not being usable. Fairly rocky, scrub, etc. I don't recall any stealth spots but it's been about 5 years. Photo of the woods in area:

    Rain Shorts

This doesn't really look like an over the pack model based on the cut in the photos but for $12.99 I'm going to get one to experiment. It looks like the sides snap so it should breathe plenty. Thanks for that link.

New List - Maine High Peaks Scenic Seven

Interesting list. I've done very little hiking in Maine outside of Baxter and had plans to explore this area over the Summer. I think I just might give this a try.

    Rain Shorts

How is the durability? I guess that is my other big concern. Brushing against undergrowth on trails that need brushing, scrub near tree line, stuff like that? Expensive piece of plastic to shred in one season. Punctures are Dyneema's Achilles heel aren't they? I do like the skirt idea for being...

    More Wild River Action

River gauges going into this weekend were extremely low, even with the recent t-storms. East Branch of the Pemi "spiked" to only 400 cfs. Rocky Branch went up noticeably on SUN when we were hiking out but the crossings were manageable (we skipped the 1st one via the new herd "path").

    Breadloaf Wilderness In VT

Continuing to search for new areas to explore and came across a Facebook post about the Breadloaf Wilderness in VT. I essentially have never done any hiking in VT except a Winter ascent of Camel's Hump a few years back so I have no knowledge of the state really. Article Made it sound very remote...
