    Mount Rainier Trip Report

Now you know what you're dealing with and that's a sure sign of success. There are plenty of half steps on the path to bigger hills. Next time you'll crush it.

    dorset peak 7/5/12

Fred, Will you approach from Dorset (south) side or Danby (north) side? Either way you can figure out with trail descriptions and google earth. As you get into Dorset look for the white house. No seriously... Dorset side; as you head on Rt 30 from Manchester to Dorset, just as you are...

    Mtn. Lion Photos ??

I've read most of the posts on here about NE mtn lions and am convinced there are lots of sighting. My neighbor just spotted one the other day. She said fish & wildlife was not excited about it, acted like it was a normal event. But here's the question I can't answer is - where are the...

    Free wilderness camping in VT?

Not sure what qualifies as wilderness camping in your opinion - but you can just wander in the woods and camp in 90% of Vermont without anyone knowing. Enjoy!

Hi, any updates on finding the trail. I'm renting a house at the end of Land's End road and am ready to head upwards, preferably on a trail. Thanks!

Attempting an unguided Mount Rainier Ascent, any tips?

In a dark blizzard was always my standard for rope systems. If I could perfect them in those elements I could perfect them anywhere. I got into the practice idling away the hours on forced bivies. I agree with JFB, I think you'll be fine. You can easily draft guided parties if you want to...

Attempting an unguided Mount Rainier Ascent, any tips?

I agree with AOC. Navigation and crevasse rescue will be your two biggest potential issues. Navigation is fairly easy on the trade routes and if you get lost you can just hunker down until a guided group goes by. I suggest a high level of competence in crevasse rescue, can you quickly rig and...

Things to do around Arlington, VT

I like White Rocks, 90+minute scramble up the face. Exploring around the Danby mine is cool. There are some cool old quarries in Dorset/E. Dorset. If warm enough, you can't beat the Danby waterslide. You can covertly camp just about anywhere including Emerald Lake. Little Rock pond is a...

Up close and personal with Ursus arctos at Katmai National Park

It's hard to understand Katmai from the outside. There are no weapons allowed because trigger happy tourists would be a greater risk than these bears. The people also get acclimated and after a few days of having 1,000 - 2,000 pound brownies walking around camp like squirrels, you get used to...

Avy bag saves a life at Stevens Pass

Pretty strong product endorsement. I've been on avalanche recoveries and once saw my dog and dear wife swept away in a slide - fortunately they were unharmed. Seems like a beacon, these bags and an avalung are worth consideration.

    Dorset Peak-winter.

You can park right where the road is chained as they plow out space for a few cars. We have no snow now, maybe a few inches up top. Enjoy your hike

Help identifying artifacts spotted along logging railroad corridor

I see lots of metal bands like photo #1 around old mining sites. My guess is that it's just random something. #2 looks like thick gauge steel so I guess that it's a section of vent/chimney sort of pipe.

    NY snowshoer dies on Rainier

My wife and I spent a snowcave evening up there looking for camp muir one February. I respect it.
