From my records... I checked out some of the photographs I took from the past couple of years from the Alpine Garden and have down as "peak" bloom time for alpine azalea and diapensia: 2010: ~ June 2 2011: ~ June 7 This year I would think that the warm temperatures from the past month or so...

All three approaches to Mt. Cube -- the Kodak Trail (AT heading south from summit), the Mt. Cube Trail (AT heading north from summit), and the Cross-Rivendell Trail -- are virtually snow-/ice-free.

Ragged Mountain Trail to the East Ridge Trail to the ledges on Old Top is just about snow/ice free. Anything that's left is easily avoided.

Next time you're at Pleasant Mountain, head up to the summit via the Ledges Trail (from Mountain Road) -- very nice views from there. You can do a nice loop using the Bald Peak Trail and then a short road walk (1.2 miles) back to the Ledges Trail trailhead. The entire distance, including road...

Check out New England Trail Conditions, and do a search for Mt. Carrigain and/or Sawyer River Road -- there are all sorts of recent reports and some include information about the condition of Sawyer River Road. In a nutshell, the road was repaired to the point where it could open for snowmobile...

Check New England Trail Conditions for recent reports on the road/West Side Trail. I believe that one of the stewards of that trail has been up it a couple of times in recent weeks.

Perhaps it is an ancillary structure related to the old (circa 1909) Glencliff State Sanitarium (now the Glencliff Home)? You said it was not too far from that (southern end of trail, east side of Slide Brook), correct?

I concur. I've been questioned by police while parked at Appalachia (no other cars in the lot, either), pre-dawn, gearing up for a hike. Friendly, spur-of-the-moment chat about "what are you doing here at this time of morning"? Perhaps, but who can say it wasn't precipitated by someone...
