    Large winter storm coming

Bob- I think I am turning a bit uncivilized by now :o To your point, its about .75 mile and a 2 minute drive to Rt 111 and full power. Getting dropped off at home today to plow, then crashing at friends so I can go home and plow tomorrow... To keep this on site topic, haven't hiked in over 5...

    grand canyon hike?

Thanks DougPaul. I have to admit the presence of this thread has peaked my interest in getting into the Canyon for a trip, and the Rim to Rim sounds appealing.

    Large winter storm coming

Yeah, this is tiring. Not expected to go online until tomorrow. One can only hope. I am starting to understand how Tom Hanks felt when he was flicking the light switch on and off :D

    Large winter storm coming

Bob-, I was wondering about you since we drove through Plaistow and saw signs of light (life). Good to hear. Unfortunately, still in the dark at my home :(

    Large winter storm coming

Without power since Thursday night at around 11:00pm. Finally bailed when we woke up today and the house thermostat was at 46 degrees. I can handle it, but not the wife and son. Plus will be colder tonight. Cooked on camping and backpacking equipment, so at least eating wasn't an issue:p...

Nice or Necessary for winter hiking

To battle starting off cold, I have tried doing what Rols has recommended to me a couple of times in winter. Stop off in advance of the trailhead and get ready for the hike (finish organizing the pack, gaiters, etc) and then drive to the trailhead. You can then get out of the car, strap on the...

    Recommendations for 11/29?

Thinking of hiking tomorrow. Any beta on the weather- rained a lot today in Southern NH- did it snow up there anywhere in the Whites? Still up in the air but prefer to avoid mud and slush... THanks for any thoughts...

    Stabilicers

I guess thats my point about contacting the company. Not sure where they were purchased or if the item has been in inventory but if the performance of the item is as different as everybody else's I'd go right to them. But thats my two cents worth.

Ray Loring Memorial Hike - PAtN, NH - November 22, 2008

I wanted to add one more thing I forgot earlier- Marty and Jason showed us the route that the SAR team brought Ray- as well as Jason and Marty down. Amazing. I can’t fathom the level of effort the SAR teams put in that day. Just amazing. Including the person at the Forest Service (feel...

    Stabilicers

Write to the company or email them. The recent version of the stabilicers has had some production issues with losing the screws. On one hike I lost all but 2- they sent new free replacement screws and on the one hike I used them on since they were fine. But reach out to them- its a known...

Ray Loring Memorial Hike - PAtN, NH - November 22, 2008

Thanks for the great TR Marty and thanks as well to you and Jason for including me on this day. I am sorry I did not have a chance to get to know Ray better, but I am honored to have participated on this day. Very nice ceremony Jason, Marty and Ridgewalker put together. Great group of people...

    Lost 4 legged family member

That is great news! I felt terrible for owners and dog when we left and I am thrilled everybody was reunited without a night apart.

    Katahdin from Pogy Pond

Thanks for the comments. PB- There aren't any adjustments to the color- the picture is as taken. I definitely have had issues leaving too much sky in shots lot this; a habit I need to break. More lake would have been better. Grumpy- There were other shots taken but not put in my gallery...

    Katahdin from Pogy Pond

I'd appreciate any feedback or input on how this shot could be improved. Its of Katahdin from Pogy Pond and I took lots of shots for the purpose of blowing up to an 8x10 for my office. Thanks for the feedback. http://tuco.smugmug.com/gallery/6018149_bTdgg#376448483_yVwut

Green Mts - how much snow...north, central, south?

Tim- A Gap to Gap would add about 2 miles of road walk to the hike, I think all downhill. I should add I don't know how far in the road is closed on the Westerly approach, maybe it gets you closer to the trailhead. The road closed sign is right beyond the driveway of the last house. Doable...

    Katahdin 2009

Kevin- agreed- me being one of them :( But I am hoping when I get there myself it will go fine. No matter what you all do, you can't go wrong. Don't forget there are some great places in the backcountry to experience without the peaks and crowds if you have interest in backpacking.

    Katahdin 2009

If you stay at Chimney Pond and have lots of daylight - which July would bring , a great trip would be up Dudley, across Knife's Edge and descend Hamlin Ridge. Covers both sides of the basin and I think would be amazing. We had to forgo Knife's Edge due to wind but went up Saddle and tagged...
