Study: Beer beats water for (post activity) hydration

Yeah... but who drinks water by the six-pack? "(hic!) Thorry Ossifer... I'm not drunk... I'm jush really... REALLY... hydrated!"

    When I Die...

Bob Kittredge - I like the posthumous peakbagging plan and the tune. I had a recent medical scare which turned out harmless, but got me thinking about mortality and appreciating life more. I had specific instructions if things went the other way, and my request was that I spend 15 minutes...

    When I Die...

Once I'm dead, do what you want with the remains. I'll be off hiking the trails ethereal. I'd would like to give something back, so feel free to leave my body face-down and naked on the Franconia Notch Recreational Trail to be used as a bike rack. Otherwise, divide me up and scatter me on the...

Water sample collected from Carrigain well

Dr. Dasypodidae is at it again. Using science to settle debate?!?!? Unthinkable! Before long we'll have to use logic and tolerance of opinions... and then where will we be? Ass deep in grammar Nazis I tells ya! No siree, don't like this one bit...

Tibetan prayer flags on summits -- yay or nay?

Hmmm... Interesting thread. Not sure I can condone putting them up, but I've never packed any out as trash when I found them either. The sightings have been fairly rare and hardly disturbing for me. If this were much more common, I might react differently - but it suspect the prayer flags...

    West Bond Sunset - October 2, 2007

Sounds like a great time. Goregous pics. I'm now kicking myself for passing up the sunset trip the last time. I don't think I'll make that mistake again.

    Baxter State Park 9/28-30/07

Many people on this trip haven’t written a trip report, and I can understand why. The report doesn’t do it justice, but I have written a small mountain of words about so many other trips, that I couldn’t stand the thought of not attempting to record this one. In some aspects this TR is a...

No pictures - here's a 1000 words on Katahdin It’s hard to sleep when you are excited, and I slept poorly. Everytime the wind hit the rainfly, I would wake and say, “Gary? Is it already 4:00?” On one occasion, something that was definitely NOT Gary snorted in reply and trudged off. Kind of neat...

    Baxter State Park 9/28-30/07

The next morning, I woke up excited about the hike but unsure if I could actually tag all 6 NEHH peaks and still enjoy the process. Secretly, I told myself that I probably would skip Fort and save my legs for Katahdin on Sunday. I even went so far as to remove my ‘Cotton Kills’ brand hiking...

    Baxter State Park 9/28-30/07

I expected a new hike, not a new personal hero; but Percival Baxter has proven worthy of any veneration I could provide. I had toyed with making the trip to Baxter State Park for the last couple of years, but every time I would review the registration process my eyes would glaze over and...

    Are you a peakbagger?

Whenever I go to a new brewpub, I always like it when they have a sampler. 6-10 tiny little glasses of beer to help me better understand and enjoy what the pub has to offer. Lists are that way for me - with so many mountains (and lists) to choose from, they lend some impetus to my hiking and...

    Baxter State Park 9/28-29

Windy, over yonder on RocksOnTop, has organized a Baxter State Park trip for this weekend. There are easily a dozen available campsites at Foster Field. Windy thought it would be a good idea to extend the invite here. Should be a blast! Baxter State Park Trip

    Killington and Pico Pico 9-22-07

Hehehe... We weren't that good. We passed Exit 1 and had to backtrack from the next exit. Glad to hear you are enjoying the trails in VT. Perhaps I'll have the pleasure of meeting you again on the trail.

    Killington and Pico Pico 9-22-07

It is good to be embraced by the sweet tyranny of the lists again. I can't tell you the confusion and analysis paralysis that came with deciding which peak to go for after completing the NH48. I have gone with friends on their peakbagging journeys, and came to envy them for having a clear and...

Pierce with the family for "Flags on the 48"

Congrats on getting the family up Pierce. It turned out to be a pretty good day for most of the peaks... particularly after seeming so threatening in the AM. It was really nice meeting you at the KOA. Thanks for letting me fool around on your guitar for a bit.

    Wildcat A - FOT48 '07

When I told my daughter about last years Flags event, she seemed really interested and I was delighted to have her onboard. Gary was returning with the near record-setting flagpole rig, and bringing along his wife MaryEllen for her first 4K – on their anniversary no less. Wenzel had emailed...

mooning the cog train on Washington

Let's say a hundred or more people were to 'mass moon' the Cog as a protest... wouldn't that be protected speech? I can even hear the rallying cry - "they can have my buttocks when they pry them from my cold dead fingers!" Ummm... maybe that slogan needs more work...
