Erving or Wendell State Forest in MA?

Erving State Forest is a great place. Erving Castle is worth a visit, as is Farley Ledge. http://www.nentc.com/directionserving.htm http://amcberkshire.org/node/52

    Bugs in the snow

Does anyone have any idea of what these might be? I saw three different species of creepy crawlies yesterday. 1) I saw a couple generic six-legged insect resembling a waterbug. It was walking across the snow. 2) A small fly, feathery in appearance. There is light blue fly that looks simliar...

Do you like to snowshoe / wear snowshoes?

I packed a trail to my shed in the backyard. When I couldn't easily throw snow over the bank at the end of the driveway yesterday, I tromped it down with my snowshoes; and I did these things in a manly fashion

    Verti-Go Away?

I used to be under the impression that I had a fear of heights; what I really have is a fear of falling. In the Army I went for a couple hundred or more helicopter rides, even rappelled out of them. If my office building had a glass elevator I could ride it to the top floor, but if I get close...

    Shoal Pond Peak - 12/8/2007

I'm planning to do this from Lincoln Woods as an overnighter in late winter. I'll look for your tracks ;)

    Livermore Trail to Livermore Pass

12/9/07 There was about a foot of powder that broke out without much extra effort. Snowshoes -- very useful There were also several running streams, even above 3000'. Plenty of chance to slip, fall & get wet. I only completed steps 1 & 2 -- Barbarossa

lincoln woods trail for xc skiing

I think you can take a chance ;) The day before the storm I walked down Elbow Pond Road in Woodstock and saw some ski tracks. The snowfall differences are probably negligable. At Lincoln Woods you could take the East Side Trail (FR 38?) on the opposite side of the river. Lots of people ski...

    Ice Axe Size

Size does matter! This weekend I used mine quite a bit as a third support point on steeper sections. I would have preferred it to be a bit longer. I'll measure mine as soon as I get the chance.

Can someone give me the bird?

I found this nest in Hubbard Brook Forest. Can anyone identify the builder. It is about 2 feet off the ground in hobblebush & made from birch bark. I believe the dark fibers are moose hair.

What actually broke and how'd you fix it ?

Parachute cord I've twice had a pair of boots decide to shed a sole mid-way through a hike. I repaired one pair with duct tape, another with parachute cord. It's pretty versatile, re-usable stuff.

    Lost in the NH100

I did an overnighter Friday & Saturday, bagging 3 peaks. Terrace Mountain was a pleasant walk with a relatively flat ridge. I spent the night at Cabot Cabin, which was in very good repair. It was cooler inside during the afternoon. so I propped the door open to allow in a bit of heat. Saturday...

    Chippewa Trail

I did most of the Chippewa Trail on 9/19/05. I went in to the old Lime Kilns and found the trail difficult to follow, so I just headed cross country. After running into the trail a bit higher I stayed on it to the top of Black Mtn. I even found gold! Yarr!!

    pre-emptive explanation 10/13/07 for HH 60 and F-1-11 Phantoms

It looked like Ft Campbell two decades ago. Dr Wu (and 4 others) saw them from the talus field near the summit of Vose Spur. The jets were actually A-10s, esentially a flying tank. The designation for a Blackhawk is UH-60, 'U' standing for utility. Yes, there is a hyphen in 'nit-pick' ;)

    Worst Case Scenario

Back in July, I tried to steer around a moose. It was about 5:30 AM, just west of Kancamagus Pass. A young cow really, really wanted to cross the road. (stupid teenagers :p ) I stepped on the brake and turned into the other lane, but she panicked and headed in the same direction. Fortunately, I...

    Moose noise

The previous day I encoutered 3 moose at once & heard a fourth lowing off in the distance. I was glad that this guy didn't say 'Stop looking at my girlfriend!' Trust me, he is much bigger than he looks here. I did get to hear him snort, however.

    Moose noise

Sunday morning I was at the top of an open birch grove. Down below I heard 'cu-unh!, cu-unh!. cu-unh! Shortly after, a mid-size bull moose stepped into view. We stared for a while and he left when I tried to move closer. The noise was hardly melodic, but the second syllable sounded about a...

    Does anybody remember when ......

If it makes you feel better, I ate a can of Underwood chicken spread & a Toblerone for dinner, slept in an MVP Sports bargain sleeping bag, then wore a cheap, nylon windbreaker purchased at Caldor's on the ridge the next morning.

How do You Treat your Water?

I know I have been taking my water for granted. Maybe I'll pour it on some flowers to show that I care.
