    Mt. Clinton Road Parking Lot

FS may have been too busy clearing the road of blowdowns from the recent storm to plow the lot (if they actually plow the lot): http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/forests/white_mountain/conditions/

"Strong and damaging winds" forecast for Thurs -- Fri (12/17 -- 12/18/2009)

Oh no, not again. I just finished cleaning up from last week's storm before the downed trees blocking the front door froze solid into the ground today.

Small snowshoe repair in or near Lincoln, NH

Nice job! For future reference on repairs beyond DIY, try the Franconia Sport Shop in greater downtown Franconia. 823-5241. I believe they still rent snowshoes, and they have a bike repair shop, so they may also do snowshoe fixes.

    12,000 Ossippee acres closed

You keep asserting, here and in the newspapers, that people will "no doubt" be fined for hiking in the Ossipees without a map and getting lost, implying that NH Fish & Game has supported the Bandit map and that Bandit's map has aided search and rescue. This is misleading.

A Real Corker Coming This Week?

How much snow here? Who knows? (Who cares?) The wind was the big story on this one. A very large 18' long fir branch slammed into our house and took the phone wire down. I could hear the white pines crashing in the woods. Lotsa cleanup to do everywhere. Power just came back on.

A Real Corker Coming This Week?

Mainly, it looks like total whiteout! Still snowing and winds are picking up. If I take the dogs out for a walk, I'll stick to a trail out the back door totally bordered (and defined) by bushes (not trees).

A Real Corker Coming This Week?

I'd guess 6-8" here in Franconia (the New World one), but the winds are blowing it around so much it's hard to tell. Still have PSNH power, however.

A Real Corker Coming This Week?

Snowing heavily (8-12" predicted) with gusty winds, still cold, winds predicted to max out at 35-50 mph later today. Several power outtages in this area in the last two weeks, which probably means the power company is behind on maintenance this year, so the candles are ready.

A Real Corker Coming This Week?

This morning's forecasts for northern Grafton County (Franconia) range from 3-6", 4-8", to 6-12" with gusty winds. Snow shovels and candles. Lousy travel day tomorrow (Wednesday).

    NH RSA 265:95 'Sno go

Clear off the snow (if you can): "Michaud said that police can issue a citation under the state RSA 265:95, which prohibits driving with "nontransparent material" on the front, side or rear windows that can obstruct the driver's view." Quoted from...

A Real Corker Coming This Week?

It looks like snow changing to rain Wednesday except in isolated higher mountain areas, possibly Franconia. http://www.eotsweb.org/forecasts.php

A Real Corker Coming This Week?

Wow, I better dig out my avy beacon to make it across the driveway.... On the ground now is 1 new inch; snowing lightly.

    Yup, same story here.

    MSR Denali Ascent Questions

Thanks to all. Very helpful. This answers the questions I had. In fact, I've owned a pair of Denali Ascents for years and love them. I now have a young (and penniless) relative coming up who would love them, and I was trying to decide whether I can justify upgrading to the Evos and passing the...

    MSR Denali Ascent Questions

Can anyone tell me what the difference is between the older Denali Ascents and the newer Denali Evo Ascents, other than color? The bindings look different. Anything else? Do the Evos come in different sizes or OSFA? Do the tails for the older model fit the newer? Thanks.

Pattern Change Snow Storm on the Way

Cannon picked up 12-18" of heavy wet snow from this storm, a good base for snowmaking. They're projecting a 12/4 opening.

Pattern Change Snow Storm on the Way

6" in Franconia @1200', heavy enough yesterday to crap out satellite internet all day. Snowing lightly again now, windy. Looks like winter. Enough snow to send out the local road plow. (The smaller one.)

Pattern Change Snow Storm on the Way

For Franconia over 1000', the NWS is predicting 2-6" of snow up to 10" starting Friday evening as rain changes over.

Here's a link to a USFS picture of the nearly completed D.R. bridge, which is supposed to reopen "in time for Thanksgiving weekend": http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/forests/white_mountain/

Does this qualify for "yuppie 911"?

I know of at least two trolls posing as SAR who have written in online to the Union Leader. They like to stir up the pot; hiker rescue (and charging for it) has become a hot issue, witness all the threads on VFTT. I'd question this one too.
