    Beavers and trail maintainance

I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you are not trolling. VFTTop'r, you ignored my point. If the habitat is there, the beaver will come, no matter how many you trap. In the long run, relocation is a quicker (or at least more permanent) solution than trapping. You also...

    Beavers and trail maintainance

Or maybe it's time to relocate the trail. "Trapping out" beaver is a fruitless effort. If their food trees are there and the water is there, others will follow. Ya either gotta deal with them or cut down their food source. I prefer dealing with them. Relocate the trail.

    cutting deadfall across a trail

Most blowdowns on a trail, whether cut or just dragged, can be removed without any undue danger to the remover or damage to the environment. I can't speak for anywhere else but if you are on a WODC trail, we would be grateful for any assistance in removing blowdowns. Just please pay attention to...

Question About Bears In The White Mountains

Most bears arn't doing lists so you're just as likely to see them on any mountain, regardless of height. And actually, there's a better chance in the lower elevations (more food). That said, the highest elevation I've seen a bear was at maybe 2000', but I've seen sign much higher. A couple of...

posterboy = whackboy, wackowhacker, or just plain whacked (either/or, it's gotta be all lower case) Oh, and whackboy: a services procurement facilitator is a pimp. You should read your own bio. :D :D :D :D :D Stinkyfeet = The Amazing Stinkyfeet. Mr. X = perfect as is, no change needed.

    Overnight on Chocorua

Yup, the summit is included in the designated scenic area. Pretty much the whole mountain is included. You can camp on Brook and Liberty Trails up to about 1700'. Stay at Pennacook or Liberty Cabin if you want to be legal.

    Abandoned Trails in the Whites

Yeah, I read your trail conditions report, Dr. D. The next weekend I and Larry, the adopter, were out there. That spot is a problem area since the ice storm of '98, as are many others. A few more years and the new growth will be high enough to discourage all the hardwood sprouting and...

    Abandoned Trails in the Whites

Yup, Arrow Path. You people are amazing! I doubt I can come up with a piece of trail trivia that would stump the entire VFTT board but I'll give it one more try, and I'll leave the White Mtns (proper) to make it a little more challenging, but still near my home turf: From what village would you...

    Abandoned Trails in the Whites

Whackfest it is! The bandana will be there. (That was the trail I was thinking of. I just knew it by a different name. Give me a break, I'm only 54. Even the 1940 guide doesn't consider that part of the FMP trail. Now, I've got no more bandanas to give away but who can tell me the name of the...

    Abandoned Trails in the Whites

NH_Mtn_Hiker: Wow, that was fast! You know, I thought you blew it on #3, but you got me on a technicality. The '17 AMC guide describes the Flat Mtn Pond Trail as branching at the upper pond, therefore going to both the lower pond AND Lost Pass. You win! Are ya gonna be at the gathering?

    Gathering 7.0 dinner

If it's potluck (or even if it isn't) I'll bring plenty of soda in case there are any other born again teatotlers, and maybe some pies. Has anyone else tried a triple-chocolate chunk pecan pie? Edit: OK, so I just read the dinner poll thread. Now I get it. Wow, sounds nice. Trouble is, I'm not...

    Abandoned Trails in the Whites

Re: Stopher Nowhere near as many as on Dicey's or BBL, both of which I know you're familiar. I'm guessing maybe 30? But in respect to Mr. Garby, let's get back to "abandoned" trails. Who can name three routes (all are trails in various states of semi-abandonment) to Lost Pass? Winner gets...

    Mt. Paugus (NH)

Published in 1893 by Houghton Mifflin. Steve or Mike Dickerman might have a copy for sale. It wouldn't hurt to ask. Cook Memorial Library in Tamworth has a circulation copy. Patronage is open to all. A copy is in the the WODC collection which is kinda in limbo right now and will probably end up...

    Abandoned Trails in the Whites

In 1993, Wonalancet Out Door Club, with the blessings of Sub Sig and USFS, resumed mainenance responsibilities of Sleeper Trail after a 40 year hiatus. In the past eleven years, WODC has put well over 1000 hours of volunteer work into putting the trail back onto its original route (there were...

    Mt. Paugus (NH)

Audrey, I've covered all the ground you mentioned, but never as an approach to the summit. Whitin Brook is mostly an open and pleasant walk, although ice storm damage has made the area just below Lawrence less enjoyable than it used to be. The slides are steep and VERY loose, the area above them...

Question ofr Tarp / Bivy users!!

I used a 5x8 for decades and was satisfied. I guess with age comes a need for more comfort. Two years ago I bought a GoLite Lair 2 tarp tent, 1 lb. Combined with a bivy, it's a 4-season ultralight shelter. 'Course, you probably wouldn't want to do a planned January overnighter above tree line.

    Mt. Paugus (NH)

There was, but not any more. If you're real observent, you might see where someone hacked out some small trees where the jar was. PB's route is easier than the shortest 'whack (NE from the top of the steep pitch on Lawrence). My favorite (but much longer) route is to follow the ridgeline from...

    Abandoned Trails in the Whites

WODC has a handfull of trails that are in need of adopters or co-adopters. I don't have the complete list in front of me but I know it includes Bennett St, Wiggen, Square Ledge and Tilton Spring. Sorry, but we're not looking for an adopter for the old cut-off between Dicey's and Walden. No...

    Abandoned Trails in the Whites

The cutoff on Dicey's Mill is strictly a bushwhack. Neither I nor others I know of have found any evidence of the old trail. It's not a bad bushwhack -- at least it wasn't before the ice storm of 98. I haven't tried it since. The scull cairn trail was "reclaimed" by USFS two years ago after...

    Adventures in the Pemi

Ouch! That bushwhack down OH looks nasty. Ya shoulda took the ridge to the REAL OH and then headed down. Couldn't a' been any worse, and you would have come out closer to the camp site. But Lincoln Slide sure looks inviting. I've got to try that.
