Madison, Adams & Jefferson as a Day Hike

I climbed Washington yesterday (first time up there), and when the clouds finally cleared I got some views of this very fine set of mountains over the Gulf. Wow. So I was left wondering what a day hike including all three would be like. And what about route suggestions? Thanks in advance for...

    ideas for a rehab hike?

Timely Question I just broke my thumb and find out today the if and when on surgery (which I expect). But I'm hoping to hit the trail soon after, cast and all. I am already designing tools to attach to my cast, things like hooks used for aid climbing to catch an edge of rock, or a bigger hook...

    Peakbagging Vermont

More useful links I think these links might address your original question a little: Summitpost Mohamed Ellozy's website and The Green Mountain Club enjoy those views of Lake Champlain, and all the rest of New England.

    Street & Nye

Summit Signs Street and Nye, at least as of July 7, both had two summit signs each. On Street they are high up. You will know when you are on top. There is a tree with a lot of scarring on the bark, where the old signs were. Look up. On Nye two trees are marked. Again, you will know when you...

    Heading to Wyoming and Idaho

Sawtooth Wilderness When I thumbed my way around the country way back when, I did a four night hike in the Sawtooth Wilderness. It was one of my best hikes ever. Since then I have often wondered precisely where I actually wandered, but I did travel near the Finger of Fate, and by Imogene Lake...

    Suggestions for Final 4000 footer

My choice: Carrigain I have given some thought to this recently. Though I still have a long way to go, I'm saving Carrigain (in fact, please save the date: Columbus Day Weekend, 2006). It will be my 48th, my 67th, and my 115th, it all goes as planned (and what opportunity for it to not go as...

    Giardia Discussion

The original ADKIns diet While ruminating on a solo hike once, it occurred to me that giardia is probably the original ADKIns diet--Adirondack Insurance diet, because if you get it, you're sure to lose some weight. Seems like there might be better choices for dieting.

    Swimming Holes

Shoe Box Falls, Rte 73, Keene NY Area Shoe Box Falls is about one mile up the North Branch of the Bouquet River from Rte 73. Drive up Rte 73 towards Keene from the ADK Northway (I'm guessing Exit 30, not far from the Split Rock Falls, another nice hole right on Rte 9). There is a lot on the...

    Spiders Above Treeline

I found myself standing just inches from one of these puppies many years ago at our dock in upstate NY. It was pointed out by my mother, who tried to say my name, but it wasn't coming out -"Da Da Da David" (she doesn't like spiders at all). If it had not scared the crap out of me I would have...

    Mudslides in the Adirondacks

If you are headed there this weekend, keep in mind that a large section of the ADK Northway is closed after mudslides and washouts, and there have been a bunch of other road closings. News story Who knows, maybe there will be a fresh slide or two to explore in the mtns.

    most common injuries/ailments backpacking ?

I am surprised that space blankets are considered so worthless. They can't have any insulating value because they are so thin, but still they should be great at reflecting body heat back in. And what about their use as emergency lightning rods? (I was thinking about this on Saturday as thunder...

    Virtually Pointless Question

Virtually pointless answer I'm guess about an inch a year. Depending on moisture. But I am not an expert

    Schroon Lake lodgings

Speaking of the Sugar Bowl I so looked forward to an amazing breakfast there--even cigarette smoke would not have been a distraction so long as I had eggs over and some home fries--but they were not open at 5 as expected! (And yes, I called ahead.) So it was whatever I could roust from the...

    Amc?

Their intro to rock climbing class was fantastic I had just joined, then got tipped off (right here on VFTT) about their Intro to Rock Climbing course from the Boston Chapter. What a great deal. $125 for five consecutive weekends (both days if you chose) of training with AMC volunteers, many...

ADK High Peaks Memorial Day vs. July 4th

Mud in the Adirondacks? I always thought you were guaranteed some mud somewhere, no matter what the weather or what the season, unless the mud was frozen solid. In fact, I count on a little Adirondack mud to complete my hiking experience!

    experience with portable radios?

My little HT After upsetting all of the folks at home by getting out a couple of hours late on a long solo winter hike, I got my ham license (last year). I carry the Yaesu VX-5R, which is just a tiny little thing, and have hit repeaters in the Whites without problem from many places. Haven't...

    Blue Hills snow cover?

No snow, but it's a swamp I was over there today. You might find a tiny patch of snow if you tried, there is no ice, but there is water and mud everywhere, even before the current monsoon. For the little guy I'd stick to the real gravel surfaces for the next couple of weeks.

    Mt. Mansfield advice?

You'll love it! The wind is usually from the NW, and Mansfield is very exposed. Sunset Ridge is right in breeze, but then again when you are walking down Sunset Ridge you are soaking up views the whole time. Laura Cowles is in the woods for the most part, so you are out of the wind 'till you...

    looking for a BIG pack

A vote for Dana Large: Terraplane Monster: Astralplane The terraplane will easily hold a lot of winter gear and is good for up to five days (or more) I would think for a winter adventure. You should not need anything as large as the astralplane unless you plan on trekking a long long way. The...
