    2024: Leas snow than normal

Agree with Skiguy. This thread is an embarrassment. I miss Peakbagger. Is there someone (maybe "Tech Admin"?) who can shut this down?

Is Giant Mountain ridge trail comparable to Algonquin?

All of the above are generally true. Elevation gain is more steady all the way on Giant, as opposed to "flat, then up" on Algonquin. Some scrambles on the Giant Ridge trail. Longer consistent slabs higher up on Algonquin. Giant summit at lower elevation is treed almost all the way to the...

    The status of blazing?

Whether you are talking about hiking or climbing (or skiing, for that matter), the important thing for land managers is to understand the REAL user population. Not some fantasy population imagined in a unit management plan, or some fantasy based on a government designation of what the "land...

Trapped on the Trap Dike: New York forest rangers rescue two people from notoriously dangerous hike

Yeah, the slabs look and feel intimidating, but at least in summer you are probably not going to die there. Anywhere on the slabs if you fall spread eagled, you would grind to a stop, all scratched up but OK. In summer, the death was at the crux, the so-called "second waterfall" where that...

Trapped on the Trap Dike: New York forest rangers rescue two people from notoriously dangerous hike

I've hiked both; the Dike many times in all seasons; Huntington ravine trail only once, many years ago. They are quite different. Huntington trail is a hike, steep in a couple spots and sometimes slick, but my buddy and I hiked down it easily with heavy packs, and never had to use our hands...

National Geographic: Remains of Andrew 'Sandy' Irvine believed to have been found on Everest

Actually, this is fun. I have always been impressed at the effectiveness of very old "pre-technology" fabrics like boiled wool, waxed cotton, etc.. It's amazing what people accomplished hundreds of years ago. But back on topic, here is the comment I posted over at ADKHighPeaks: "Well, one...

    (Another) New AMC Logo!

I don't usually post in "AMC" threads, as I'm not an AMC member (I'm in the Adirondacks). But I was taken by the illustration on the AMC site titled "The AMC logo through the decades—in *ALL* its many forms!" (emphasis mine) Unless I missed it, the stick man was not there. Was that not one of...

    "Traditional" Route To Skylight

I did mostly day hikes. Back when I had young knees, I did a lot of stupidly long day hikes in that area. Gothics is easiest from the JBL side, via orebed brook and the cable trail. Also reasonable is Gothics from AMR, via Beaver Meadow, or (longer) via Pyramid. To get to Gothics from Upper...

Highwater Trail in the Wild River Area Rescue

Same problem with many older trails in the Adirondacks. The only answer is a complete re-route to higher, well drained or rocky terrain, or good solid flat "bench-like" terrain. Complete re-routes are a lot of work. Many "land management" agencies have abandoned their chartered...

Merriam Woods - A cautionary tale

I have not been there (although I have been to nearby Rumney many times). Thankfully most people involved here have had common sense and have worked together. The main (perhaps only) mistake the developers made was not identifying and communicating with the landowner. They sort of skated...

Mt Major - Major Trail work and limited parking for the next 12 weeks

Seen it. Propaganda. Again, this is just one opinion. It is BY NO MEANS representative of "all parties."

Mt Major - Major Trail work and limited parking for the next 12 weeks

It's not the case that everyone in the Adirondacks thinks this. There is a wide range of opinions. And there are many factors other than parking involved.

    Water filter

I have a fairly old Katadyn Hiker (I think it's old enough to be the "PUR" brand). Still works fine. I put a coffee filter over the intake for cloudy water. Only use it a couple times a year, for longer hikes. I clean it with a clorox water solution before putting it away, so nothing grows...

Ultra Runner Search and Rescue in the Pemi

SPOT uses the Globalstar sat network. Garmin uses the Iridium sat network. (This is what DayTrip was alluding to above.) Iridium is generally thought to have better coverage. If you can afford to, ditch the Spot and go with some device that uses the Iridium network.

Ultra Runner Search and Rescue in the Pemi

Another very good question. In the F&G report, it's not discussed whether or not he had any kind of messaging device. I don't do anything solo nearly as ambitious as his trip, but I do often go solo. I always carry my old InReach (it's the last "DeLorme" model, now operated by Garmin). I...

Ultra Runner Search and Rescue in the Pemi

Well, I don't understand it either. But F&G seems to be making it a factor in their report.

Ultra Runner Search and Rescue in the Pemi

Maybe we can leave the semantics behind? What a massive sidetrack! Still no more detail on "...had lost his light source..." Maybe the sun went down? We all "lose a light source" very predictably every day when that happens. Regardless of the weather or what other gear he had, the report...

Ultra Runner Search and Rescue in the Pemi

"...had lost his light source..." Boy that's awfully vague. Maybe deliberately vague? I'd like to know more details about this: Dropped his headlamp? Headlamp batteries ran out? Stupidly relying on a phone for light? This is just about the most avoidable cause of rescues; more detail would...

Last Minute Harriman State Park Beta

Remember that this is New York. There are many common sense solutions for this issue. But here, you will wait 20 years to see anything implemented.
