It's not the case that everyone in the Adirondacks thinks this. There is a wide range of opinions. And there are many factors other than parking involved.

SPOT uses the Globalstar sat network. Garmin uses the Iridium sat network. (This is what DayTrip was alluding to above.) Iridium is generally thought to have better coverage. If you can afford to, ditch the Spot and go with some device that uses the Iridium network.
