    Hiker Fatality in Catskills (??)

Yes, that is the reason - they were still investigating and trying to be sure they had any pieces that may have gotten separated from the main plane to (hopefully) help them see what happened.

Great Barrington Mass area Butternut Fire "may not be fully extinguished until winter"

Very likely at least a couple of those. Would suspect that the steady rain is cutting down the fire itself, and certainly washing the smoke out of the air. Wind may have changed as well if there was a storm front arriving. Can't say it was noticeable further south in the state (such as the...

    Mt. Abraham VT Current Conditions?

There is a storm tomorrow into Friday that may have some snow mixed in the higher elevations in MA/VT and the Catskills. How much remains to be seen (it may be just a little, or more, or might be different in different parts of the area).

Is Giant Mountain ridge trail comparable to Algonquin?

There was talk of changing that to 12" at one point, but as far as I know it was never officially done.

New gate on the trail bridge.

At least that makes more sense than what so many places have done (just remove the whatever it is and leave it without totally for years until a replacement is funded, if it is).

    The status of blazing?

Plus, that one has the (somewhat more) unusual part of having such a large area at the top that is completely bare, which means that other types of marking would be far more difficult (nothing to attach markers or signs to).

AT trail damage from Hurricane Helene

Seems likely, though also very possible that with some of the storms and declarations of disasters that it may be easier to relax or work around those rules that apply under "normal" conditions.

Firefighter dies while battling brush fire on Lamentation Mountain in Connecticut along the New England National Scenic Trail

Makes sense - just thinking that many mountains wouldn't have such a road (particularly when a fairly major hiking trail is also there), but then again being it says they were using an ATV that caused the death they would need at least some sort of pathway for that...

Firefighter dies while battling brush fire on Lamentation Mountain in Connecticut along the New England National Scenic Trail

If that's the same one I saw mentioned elsewhere, there was a vehicle accident somewhere (assuming a road runs near the bottom of the mountain, most likely?) and that was how the fire began. Due to the dry weather as you mention, it spread very quickly (and of course up a mountain would be a...

    EMS Sold -- Again

Doesn't seem that it would be that difficult, given that the stores are not huge and now with just seven of them, a couple large trucks could fill all of them pretty quickly. Not like trying to get hundreds of Rite Aid stores restocked ;)

    EMS Sold -- Again

Plus, about that same distance in another direction is Colonie Center, which has both an existing LL Bean and a recently opened Sierra store side by side. Probably not good for EMS, but good for those looking for items in being able to compare and shop at multiple options in a fairly small...

    EMS Sold -- Again

Though that is a bit harder for the stores outside Maine (given that Reny's is a Maine store ;) ).

    EMS Sold -- Again

Really odd, just got an email from them about the Total Inventory Blowout, which lists 7 locations - any guess as to which ones they list (hint, the list looks REALLY familiar from someplace around here ;) ).

    EMS Sold -- Again

Interesting, but it does make some sense, as all of those are in or fairly near areas where the gear that EMS offers would be useful (several near mountain areas, Portsmouth for the water-based options while still not too far from mountains). Saratoga may be the furthest off, but it is close...

    EMS Sold -- Again

Email just came advertising a total inventory blowout (20-60% off) at 15 locations: Danbury CT Burlington, Canton, Hadley MA N Conway, Peterborough, Portsmouth, West Lebanon NH Portland ME Bridgewater NJ Ithaca, Lake Placid, Saratoga NY Warrington PA Burlington VT Not quite sure what that...

    EMS Sold -- Again

The website is working again - that shows 21, but does NOT show the one in Albany that was closing (at first to move across the plaza) so that may be moderately accurate (maybe the post above got the number reversed?).

Locking Bike Overnight At Flume Gorge Parking Area

Perhaps that would be a reason to bike at the beginning (much like many recommend parking at the end of the hike and getting a shuttle ride to the start)? That way, after the hike you have a little drive to pick up the bike, but not the issue of it having gone missing when you need to ride back...

    AT in Mass

The Berkshires have a (moderate) bus system (moderate for a smaller area, not like what would be found in Boston). Unfortunately, they have had issues getting drivers, so it may vary in availability. Normally, the map looks like it would be accessible from Route 2 in North Adams and Route 8...

Let's be careful out there this week.

Along with any additional mental stress when/if parts of that 52-mile course are shared with others (seeing as how Queens is not exactly the Adirondacks or the Catskills, so it seems difficult to have a 52-mile route that doesn't interface with traffic at least one or thirty times) :)

Let's be careful out there this week.

That also explains the issue in general - like we see these days many of the schools closing (or doing half days) for these hot days, which was never done in the past. Likely because the kids at those times were acclimated to it, as they were outside more and may have even not had air...
