Neil,
Wardy and I need the sewards. we are arriving Thursday night, but I have already volunteered Wardy to clean the port a potties. Assuming he can complete that before 430AM, we're in. We are usually up and ready to rock by 400AM to give us plenty of time. any thoughts? slamdog

hike with kids

Probably will bring my son (13) and daughter (9) on the trip if they don't stop driving me crazy! any advise on what hike to take them on...and yes mom wants them back.

Gathering Questions

I'm hoping to make it up to the Gathering later this month. A few questions:

How far is parking from where we will be setting up tents?

Is anyone planning on bagging any 46ers on Sat? I'd be up for doing anything other than Marcy, Algonquin, Haystack, Dix, Gothics, Colden, Giant, Wright, TableTop, Rocky Peak, Armstrong, Big Slide, Upper Wolfjaw, Lower Wolfjaw, or Cascade. If no one has any plans, I was thinking maybe Phelps.

Hopefully, I can get out of work early enough on Friday to make it up for dinner.

Breakfast at Noonmark sounds good for Sunday. Can we book the whole place?

Big time bummer...

I won't be in Hawaii this time, but yet again, I will not be able to make it to a peak_bgr fiesta. I am really bummed out about it, but I have a conflict that I just realized.

The 2005 Summer Southcoast Artisans' Studio Tour is that same weekend. My photo gallery is one of the stops on the tour. I am really excited to be able to take part in the tour this year. The collection of artists are very talented and it is nice for me to be able to be placed in thier group.

It is such a downer that it is the same weekend as the BBQ. I was really looking forward to making it this year.

Have a great time! I hope to see a bunch of you in VT in September.

Mark,

You park in the christmas tree field next to Spence's house and walk 50 feet. He has a huge backyard with the hills in the background.

Ride from Albany?

Can anyone give me a ride up to the Gathering from the Albany airport? I'll be arriving at the airport the morning of the 18th.

Santas!

I have a couple of friends who are planning to do Couchy on Saturday (20th) and I would like to join them. They have Santanoni and Panther but not Couch, I need all three. This means a super early start to get back in time for a beer and well done piece of beef. :D

I hope to get down to the BBQ on either Thursday or Friday but not sure yet.
I'll be bringing some of my homemade Vindaloo wraps (Polymorphs) and a selection of some strange Canadian brews.

...Anyway, just in case Bubba's agenda does not materialize, consider me "on standby" status.

my original post was planting sugestions for hikes that were multi-peaked. My availablity was dependant on (1) inspiration (2) how hung-up I was on doing a HH with our host (3) general interest

I've done them all before. I'd like to get over to Pyramid -- but the proposal of Sawteeth, Pyramid, Gothics, Armstrong, Upper Wolfjaw is a long, open ended ordeal.

newcomer to the BBQ

I've been lurking here for quite a while, with the occasional question or comment. I would love to come to the BBQ, since it is the first time a VftT gathering has been on a day not otherwise occupied on my calendar. I see that there are some other first-timers/lurkers hoping to come, so that eases my anxiety a little of crashing the party of a bunch of strangers!

I will probably be coming from a few days of high peaks backpacking, and would probably arrive on Thursday night, up for something interesting and not too strenuous on Friday. Saturday I have plans to do the Trap Dike w/ one of the ADK chapters. I work Sundays, so I'd head home after that hike (in effect, leaving the bbq on Sat. am.). And, hopefully I can convince a friend of mine to join me.

Am I to understand that the only cost of "admission" now is a local brew and a willing spirit? Count me in, I think! I'd really love to meet this crew of characters!

:)

I think we're going to have a gathering record here. Looking at over 60 this year, that's great. See you all in a couple weeks.

For those that don't know... that was the landlord that just spoke. Image that -- 60 people and she'd happy about it!! :D

For any newbie, the firepit is large enough to support the crowd -- the jewel of the backyard!

Coldwater - there are no strangers at a VFFT BBQ or Gathering... strange people, maybe... but certainly never a stranger! You can now chill... show up with a smile, a story, an appetite, some local brew, and a camp chair and you should be all set!

cool, sounds great! To be honest, I don't think of the folks on this board as strangers, but I didn't want to presume too much, since I "know" people only from reading posts here (and not interacting much). That is going to be quite a crew! Looking forward to the weekend! :)

Told my camp I need off that Friday, the ass't director is really angry with me, to make them happy I have to dress up like Willie Wonka that week to kick off the "Goodwill Games".

What do you have to do at work to get the day off when your really needed? Gee that sounds like a good thread..

Also...need info on best kid hike...we did Noonmart (or is it Noonmark) last year.

Help needed with logistics

So, it looks like my son needs the car again that weekend, so I'm not as mobile as I had hoped. I'll still be able to make it if I can get a little help.

I'm going to be down at the Loj Thursday evening with my bicycle. I'll spend Thursday night there.

Is anyone hiking from the Loj on Friday who could (a) let me join you, and (b) give me a ride back to Spence's place after?

Would anyone have extra room in a cooler? I'll probably have some Belle Gueule at the trails cabin (if the crew doesn't find it/drink it) that I can bring down, but carrying a cooler on a bicycle is a bit much.

Saturday. If anyone with room in a car wants to do anything, I'm game. If someone not familiar with the area wants to do something I can be your 'guide'. I'm willing to do anything fom the Great Range (including Marcy & Haystack) in a day, down to something slow and easy.

There's always extra room in my cooler ... well, actually there's always extra coolers in my room. It seems I may be able to make it this year, so I'll bring along a couple extra sizes of coolers. If the weather is cooler I may do some sort of bushwhack along the way, otherwise I look forward to hearing all the various hiking options tossed about.

It looks like I'll be coming up, but just for the regular two-day weekend. I'll probably be up for a long hike Saturday and maybe a shorter one Sunday. I might not make it up until about 9 Friday night. If someone hasn't already picked up Pete Hickey from the Loj, I could do so whenever I get up there.
I can't get any full days off because I'm taking some time the following week and also my boss is on vacation on the 18th and 19th. There's a chance I can bail out a little early on Friday though.

Matt

Final plans: have bear canister, will travel

For anyone who'd like to join us, here's what Pat, Marge, Little Bear, and I will be up to that week:

Sunday, 8/14: leave home and be at Corey's by about noon. Hike in to Calkins Brook and set up camp.
Monday: climb Emmons, Seward, and Donaldson and hike out. Motel night.
Tuesday: hike in to Boquet River leanto via Round Pond, set up camp. Climb Dix and Hough same day or next day.
Wednesday: hike out. Motel night.
Thursday: free day to climb whatever Marge and Little Bear want to do. Maybe Gothics and Armstrong via Beaver Meadow Falls? Last year we did the Wolfjaws from the Ausable Club and those trails were just awesome. Pat and I might as well start red-lining.
Friday: Marshall via Tahawus/Herbert Brook.
Saturday: tag along on someone else's hike.

Can't wait to welcome the Rainier team back and hear all about it! What an excuse for a slide show!

When??

Audrey, I'm sure sooner or later I would have got the point (and I don't HAVE TO publicly admit this...) but I had it on my adgenda that I had to be at the BBQ this coming weekend... I noted your starting time and thought... how are they getting to the BBQ starting on the 14th??

 Thank you for saving me!! Now... I hope I have next weekend open! I save face at home too-- I was going away during MJ's birthday  (but I asked her to come along...)

Have fun in the woods -- good company. It should be great. I hope you have a beautiful day on Dix!! It's an awesome peak and one to savor!! Marshall will be oh-so-much-less!! And then.. without me!!

I didn't understand the reference to you and Pat "red-lining" -- you're not doing drugs or anything, huh??
