Anyone ever do or hear of someone doing a Pemi Loop where you follow the actual Pemi Wilderness Boarder as a pure loop? There are some trails (Franconia Ridge) but eventually you're going over Hitchcock, Hancock, Carrigain off trail for a ways. Maybe a good day hike!?

Anyone up fer a challenge? Sounds like a backpacking challenge if ya ask me. Takers?

Have fun going from Carrigain Notch up the side of Mt. Lowell:D . I was up at the Wilderness Boundary on the Carrigain Notch Trail on Friday and could only look up at the rotting slides of Mt. Lowell in awe.
It goes up the North Western side of Lowell.... probably the slide on the left side if you look at it from Carrigain Notch. It looks difficult but definitely doable. I looked at it in Saturday! I'm sure somebody's walked it.

Does this count?

I think I did something similar last summer; my route was:
From Lincoln Woods Wilderness Trail to Thoreau Falls Trail
to Ethan Pond Trail to Zeacliff Trail to Zeacliff Pond Day 1
then
Zeacliff Pond to TwinWay to Zealand Hut (to check it out) backtrack
on Twinway/AT all the way to Garfield Tentsite Day 2 (hung around at the hut for quite a while!)
Garfield Tentsite over Garfeild, Franconia Ridge, down Osseo Trail, and out
Day 3.
It was a nice trip! Did it last August on way back from Cape Chignecto Trail in Nova Scotia and a side day hike in Mahoosuc Notch/Speck. First time I ever hiked in The Whites. It was good to see the AT Thruhikers.
Zeacliff Trail was a ton of fun with a full pack- had to take it off at one point and lift it up a big ledge.

That would be incredible. The Ethan Range would be beautiful east of shoal pond trail, all bogs and deep fir for 5 miles. mmmm. But then you gotta bushwhack all the bonds..which would get horrible because the wilderness boundary is slighty off the trail a quarter mile or half. I think the area around carrigain notch and ethan range is what I would like to do. Mount Lowell is amazing, there is a fissure type strange crack up there I despertly want to see. -Mattl

Let's be logical -- you can stay on the trail when the wilderness boundary is 1/8 mile away and parallel. But there are areas like Lincoln Woods - Hitchcock - Hancock - Carrigain - Vose Spur - Lowell - Anderson - Nancy - "Nancy Range Peaks" 3262' and 3256' where there are no trails in the area.

No one in their right mind would walk 1/8 mile away from the trail for miles on end. I'm sure somebody would do it but I've already stated the obvious. :) It would be quite something of a bushwhack though. Probably pretty interesting -- someone had to have travelled that line before or someones.

I'd rather do 3 wimpy Pemi Loops than bushwhack the Wilderness boundary  ...and could probably do the former a lot faster, too! :D

Hey, come to think of it, that would be about 100 miles, yes? Hmm... That would be quite the challenge for someone now, wouldn't it?......
:D  ;)

Hmmm... I can only think of one person who might be for that kind of a challenge... ;)

Hey Wu, ya gonna start on Hancock and work your way around clockwise??? I know you like to take a long route when attempting the Captain but that's ridiculous!!!! :D :D

Good idea - I am going to attempt that. Right now. I'll report back later.

Well, I pulled a hammy on the way to my car, so I didn't quite make it. But I'll let it heal up and try it again later. Thanks for the idea!

tell me more about your crack!

tell me more about your crack. i'd never seen photos of lowell before seeing NH_Mtn_Hiker's photos from this weekend. is it just lots of crazy crystals or a large fissure one can climb in?

On the right side of lowell (looking from Carrigain Notch) there is a large "crack" going straight down. I'll look and see if either I have a picture or I can find one.

-Dr. Wu

Edit: You can see it on the right side of the summit. Starts at the top. I have a picture (at home) of this same thing taken while walking Carrigain Notch.

Its a huge fissure that goes in quite a ways. Its deep enough that I have never seen light pentetrate all the way in. Very unusual for our geologic features in the north east. I want to explore it. -Mattl

We had this discussion here a couple of years ago, if any of the braggarts actually went there they must have got stuck as they didn't report back :)

It's been done in a day in winter, adding Duck Pond & Saunders
