Sherpa, the vacation request is going to get submitted tomorrow. Of course, Chomp has me thinking about football playoffs and, of course, the EAGLES will be there but hiking it will be. If its really cold, I will entertain offers to share a warm winter tent as my Sierra Clip is really only a three season tent as is my sleeping bag. Of well, time to purchase more gear :D

Same question a few months ago... can i do it? How do i prepare for something like this? How does a newbi get ready? I can get gear but it takes more than that. I hope to get out to the catskills in nov and harriman in dec wonder if that's good enough trainning?

coldfeet: a Winter Gathering is a good place to get your feet wet, figuratively. If issues occur, there are plenty of options (Hiker's Paradise is 10 miles away, and ~$20). The camaraderie makes the cold a lot more bearable, and you'll have lots of help getting things worked out when you set up. Some folks come up for 1 night, others for all. If 1 night, Saturday is usually Pot Luck night, so that would be the best choice.

Sherpak,

Thx for info, how about ideas of getting into shape? I haven't hiked since the bbq in august,, guess i know the answer for that, go out and do it. Hope my scout trainning class doesn't conflict with the trip. Already itching to go, weird feeling, hard to explain it to my wife and friends, you know what i mean?..

coldfeet: I absolutely know how you feel. At this point my wife and family just give me blank stares when I mention winter camping :). The best exercise for winter hiking is ...winter hiking as you guessed. I'm always out of shape, but still manage to get out there. I don't have time during the week to spend a lot of time exercising :(

In this section of the Whites, there are options for everyone. From easy XC skiing to Presidential summits, and pretty much everything in between.

I'm there! I've always wanted to ski the Wildcat trail. As for being a better skier--I'm not the one who is a former ski jumper! But I'm pretty sure I can make it down without too much trouble.

As for lodging, being the cold weenie that I am, I'll be sleeping at Joe Dodge. Unless my arm gets twisted real hard...it might be an opportunity to see what winter camping is all about.

Regardless--I'm forward to it!

Man!! I'm looking at David Goodman's book, and 19 of the backcountry ski tours are within an easy ride of that campground! I'm going to seriously try to get up there for the entire duration. The only problem is going to decide what to do. God -- you could spend the entire 4 days just XC'ing around Jackson!

I thinks I'd like to get up on Thursday and buy a lift ticket to Wildcat and take a few runs on the backcountry gear, and maybe do an easy tour, perhaps the Pinkham Notch tour, to warm up. The big one would be the Wildcat Valley run, and I'd like to do the skin up Polecat as well. It's what to do on Saturday -- Chocoura? Moosilauke? XC at Lincoln?

Decisions, decisions.....

Mark

I was considering maybe finishing my NH48 on a winter Moosilauke trip sometime in January and the winter Gathering might be a perfect time to do that except an hour is a LONG drive in winter so I'll have to play that by ear . . . but it gives me the option in any case . . .

It would be on my way home to Mass, so I might make it my "parting shot" on the way out.

I'M IN :)
Probably coming up Friday and stay through Sunday.
Depending on if I get the gifts from Santa on my list I will camp otherwise Motel.
Never been up there before so I can't wait to learn from the pros.
I am sure the winter camping down here is more like 3 season for you New Englanders.

So how many peaks can you get on a winter weekend with the excellent guide services you all provide.

Hello Al

Hey Al,

I'm in Nassau county, Plainview.. went to ems in Carle Place earlier checking out some gear.. hope i can go maybe we can talk sometime... Coldfeet (David)

Back to NH Whites for winter! Lovin' it! It's in the plan. The Wildcat Trail sounds like a blast and a good candidate for a small (maybe large) group. I'd look to tackle this on Saturday, as I won't be in earlier than Friday evening. Last time I came in on Thursday, maybe I should think this over again...

Coldfeet
that would be great I am in Wantagh
Maybe when you get set with some basic gear we can team up and get some winter Catskill peaks in before the winter gathering.

One should plan on up to 1.5 hours to reach the Beaver Brook Trail or as long as 2 hours to reach the Glen Cliff Trail on Moosilauke from Dolly Copp in January, if the roads are in good shape.
