Called IME about rentals.. prices are good, EXCEPT they are updating them a few $ more.. classes look good and not to $.. thinking of really checking them out.. thx for help..ps they love the plastic boots.. but i can get the asolo (sp) at 20% off in a few weeks at ems during club weekend.. decisions, decisions.

Winter training course

:) Also check out the NH AMC Chapter Winter Hiking seminar that starts this month. The price is right, $25.00......and the knowledge and experience you get on the hikes is very valuable. Plus you meet lots of new people that you still hike with long after the course.

Kevin Rooney and Bob Humphreys are the instructors. Their is a write up in the events section of the latest AMC Outdoors, in the NH section or chapter sactivities.

If you take the VFTT Sherpak Winter Camping Instructional Course and Beer Tasting, it will only cost you the price of the campground!

Thx but AMC is also expensive $650 plus...probably going to chill out in the catskills some weekends with a friend and learn while doing.

Now this is my idea of education! I don't need the winter camping instructional part,soo...can I test through and proceed to the beer tasting part? For educational purposes,of course!:D

I realize this does not apply to the dates for the winter gathering, but.......for folks who would like to experience the Joe Dodge Lodge at Pinkham Notch, there is a special deal from now til December 23. If you stay midweek (Su-Th) I believe the price is $45. If you stay 3 or more consecutive nights, it is $39. This includes a huge breakfast AND dinner.....

I hope to possibly meet up with you all mid January for the gathering. I will be attending Kevin and Bob's winter hiking workshop and hope to head up north as often as possible!

Geezum, a guy gets busy at work for a few days and all kinds of things happen around here!!!

Count me in. :D

And thanks, Sherp, for the organizing and rabble rousing!

A plug for an unpublicized local cross country ski area - The Nansen Ski Area in Berlin, it is a cross country ski area run by the oldest ski club in the country. Definitely not glitzy, a nice alternative to the local commercial areas. They tend to be very conservative in rating ther trails, great for families and beginners. It is a bit hard to find (although those who have found success pond road are on the right track).

Its worth visiting as this may be their last winter in their present location, as their site is on a corner of one of the proposed sites for the new federal prison.

On a completely different note, be aware that Barnes field is fairly close to a local snowmobile route, so winter solitude isnt guaranteed, although I suspect that with this bunch the snowmobilers will be the ones complaining about the noise!.

peakbagger, good to hear you chime in, and hope that you will drop by and grab a a hike or three with us!

I've skied often on the Nansen trails. Is the warmup hut still there? It is a nice little jaunt on a nice Full Moon evening. Unfortunately this year's Gathering is over a mostly moonless weekend.

peak_bgr: wood is always good, but don't pull the trailer all that way. I'll buy it if I have to (my brother-in-law and sister live in the next town). Better to make it easy for the long distance travellers. You and Maddy have done more than your share, and deserve to kick back in front of a warm fire and relax :)

peakbgr: Are you making this gathering?

(All right! A VFTT first! The peakbagger trifecta in one post!)

I plan on being there. I should be able to get out there from thurs-sunday, with my friend whom you met on Moosilauke. Maybe by then he will have a long-sleeve shirt at least

I have approximately 0 backcountry ski gear, but if the trail is wider than 2 feet then i am fine with lugging my stuff up and skiing down. Of course, i also want to have fun skiing, and if it snows then count me in at wildcat at least for one day.

Although i have already made plans for a presi traverse, i would love to continue crossing off some 4kers. Anything NOT in the presidentials i would love to do, but of course ill go wherever anyone else goes...

I want to get this right ... which *nights* does that mean? Just Fri, Sat, Sun?

Can you or a Moderator change the subject title?

Okay, good. That means nothing changes for me, since I plan to be there Thursday night (nay, late afternoon) as well.

I read I learned

hey I was just checking out the posts and found out my hubby and brother are attending. Haven't heard anything about it from them but- I'll assume I'm tagging along. If anyone needs me to do or bring anything please let me know. I might even come out of my hiking HIATIS and join some of you for a hike. I am a good solid hiker- but I mean hiker not trail runner. ALso, now that I'm getting to know you all and managed to creep my way into Darren's angels photo op maybe I'll live it up a little that weekend myself.

Can't wait to see you all and don't forget to order VFTT shirts.

Maddi

Maddi,
Hopefully we'll see you out there, it won't rain, and your tent will be more than 4 feet from the Medical Station (i.e. where the "Good Doctor M" resides :) You actually need to come out to keep Spence and Brian out of trouble :)

This is a great area for any cold weather interests. Great skiing, snowshoeing in addition to great hiking makes it one of my favorite areas.

wild & woolen

I'll look forward to being there.
Hoping for some nice deep snow, so along with alpine stuff, I'll be bringing some nice wooden snowshoes and would be interested in getting together with any one for some on and off trail travel one of those days.
So if your woodies are forlorn and negelected it might be fun to dust them off and head for the hills for awhile.
A nice day for woolens, mukluks, and babiche would be fun in fine form.
Any ideas?
