While up at Bearly Live 08 I had my sights on the Baldfaces, a hike I'd heard so much about but never had the chance to do. Seeker had done it before but was game for the trip, Mimi had just finished a 8 day hike in the Whites that had more then its share of rain and was game for the views. Friday night at the camp was full of music and great food, old friends and new acquaintances. The bands were hot, but we headed to bed at the campground fairly early.
Saturday looked clear and bright, and we started out in search of coffee and food, which we didn't find until Fryeburg ME. At the trailhead we spotted Youngblood's car, but he was headed counterclockwise while we were going clockwise. The first part of the hike was moderately uneventful but we had a great time getting to know each other. We started climbing at the Shelter and we were loving the ledges.
And the Blueberries! Oh. My. God. The blueberries were in fine form, and we kept stopping and gathering the sweet fruit. It added at least an hour to our hike but it was worth every berry. Once we got up above treeline we had amazing views. Mimi was in heaven; she'd been looking at the insides of clouds for the past week. We ended up on South Peak with the place all to ourselves. After lunch we saw a runner approaching, and it was Youngblood who had run over from North Baldface. Juniper and Unfrozencaveman were right behind and we met them shortly along the ridge.
We were beginning to feel the heat as we got to the top of North Baldface. Alas, the map said we had 4+ more miles to go. The trip down was a bit muddier then the trip up. We went on autopilot a bit, but we still managed to have a good time. We hit the cars at 6:00, found the Dale's Pale Ale in the cooler, and hit the road. We bought some steak for dinner, some red wine, and headed back to the Campground for another fun night of music, food, and friends.
