While up at Bearly Live 08 I had my sights on the Baldfaces, a hike I'd heard so much about but never had the chance to do. Seeker had done it before but was game for the trip, Mimi had just finished a 8 day hike in the Whites that had more then its share of rain and was game for the views. Friday night at the camp was full of music and great food, old friends and new acquaintances. The bands were hot, but we headed to bed at the campground fairly early.

Saturday looked clear and bright, and we started out in search of coffee and food, which we didn't find until Fryeburg ME. At the trailhead we spotted Youngblood's car, but he was headed counterclockwise while we were going clockwise. The first part of the hike was moderately uneventful but we had a great time getting to know each other. We started climbing at the Shelter and we were loving the ledges.

And the Blueberries! Oh. My. God. The blueberries were in fine form, and we kept stopping and gathering the sweet fruit. It added at least an hour to our hike but it was worth every berry. Once we got up above treeline we had amazing views. Mimi was in heaven; she'd been looking at the insides of clouds for the past week. We ended up on South Peak with the place all to ourselves. After lunch we saw a runner approaching, and it was Youngblood who had run over from North Baldface. Juniper and Unfrozencaveman were right behind and we met them shortly along the ridge.

We were beginning to feel the heat as we got to the top of North Baldface. Alas, the map said we had 4+ more miles to go. The trip down was a bit muddier then the trip up. We went on autopilot a bit, but we still managed to have a good time. We hit the cars at 6:00, found the Dale's Pale Ale in the cooler, and hit the road. We bought some steak for dinner, some red wine, and headed back to the Campground for another fun night of music, food, and friends.

Rest of the pictures are HERE

Great pics as always Dave!! I've done a few hikes in Evan's Notch, and admired the Baldfaces from a distance. Now I guess that I need to do this one. Until then, I will admire your views.

Of all the great views in your images, being the father of 5 teenagers makes the shot of the shelter showing the young'un with his low rider shorts showing his stylish underwear (not poly pro) and the cig hanging from his mouth is a classic! And to think, these are the ones who will be making the decisions for us when we are older. Keep the faith!!

Dave,

Really nice. Your pictures brought back some fond memories. When my daughter was about 6 we stayed at the AMC's Cold River Camp for a week and did a lot of hiking from there.
One memorable day was the Baldface Circle. Just fine photos.

Thanks,
Alan

Nice pictures Dave. That's one place I'm looking forward to getting to. Thanks for sharing.
I'll be there too!
Nice TR and pics as usual.
I think I have planned to hike the Baldface Loop three times and each day the forecast was overcast and rain so I passed on it...someday.

Smart! The glory of the hike is in the slabs up to South Baldface, and I would not want to be on them in the wet! We hit a couple of damps spots and it was not fun.

I can't recommend this hike highly enough. It's more challenging--and fun--than might be expected for sub 4000' peaks.

It was a fine day with two fine people! Mimi I do hope to hike with you again and soon.

I have some pics that if I get off my lazy tuff I will post. Dave might like to see pics of himself for once. I see that as my job!

My pics look just like Dave's except his are better. What a great hike! I saw UFC do a handstand on the North summit. Amazing views everywhere including the swimming hole near the TH.

Baldfaces/MEader Ridge was one of the easiest drive-and-hikes, back when I lived in Gorham and South Windham, Maine. First time (solo, in March/April '88) I turned back from N Baldface because some inclined slabs were slippery with algae and snowmelt. My ankles have no regrets.

Meader Ridge looks the same. That's a relief; back in 1989 it appeared that the neighboring valleys were being clear cut, one forty at a time.
