I found a great guidebook on how to survive in the wilderness:

http://www.amazon.com/Wilderness-Survival-Gregory-J-Davenport/dp/0811729850

It has lots of pictures for all you 14%ers... enjoy!

P.S. Where's that mod hat guy? This thread has eclipsed its usefulness. Quick, somebody make a Gary Moody joke! :D
Yeah, rumor has it Gary was reading the guide book while he was in the latrine.

Guys, just go buy the damn book. Buy it at the Mountain Wanderer and keep Steve Smith company (errrrr.... or wait in line to talk to the guy. When does he find time to write!?). Buy all his books too -- the one about the 4000'ers and the one called, "Wandering around in the Whites" are pretty amazing and great supplements to the WMG (which he edits). Steve is such a great guy too -- it's so great to see his store thriving! Support the local guy!!

I'm shocked that in 5 pages of bickering no one has mentioned...

Simple question? Google it.

Or search VFTT. Want to know the distance/elevation on the Franconia Loop? I bet there are 10 million reports on this site alone that have that info. You don't even have to buy the book. (although I'd recommend it :) )

Yeah, well...there's a middle aged dude who's taken to wandering around/biking around downtown Brattleboro. He doesn't have a guide book. He doesn't have a pack in which to put water or snacks. I don't think he's lost.
He also wears no clothes!!!!

I'm not kidding I saw him today walking on Eliot street and yesterday riding his bike near the library. Nekkid. Completely. Okay..he had shoes on today and a bike helmet on yesterday. Safety first!

It's not illegal to be naked in public in VT.

This seemed like more fun than continuing the current thread discussion. And I thought it would make a few people giggle. Giggling is good. :D

Only a tiny bit guilty feeling for adding this incredibly frivilous post. It's 86 degrees in my house...cut me some slack.

Hot damn! Good to know! I am constantly learning new things since moving to Vermont. Public nudity! And health conscious (biking). No wonder I fit in so well here, ToeCozy. Thanks for that info, I haven't had time to read the Civil Code yet.

:D

I bought the book. Then, prior to going to the Whites I opened it. It came in very handy for figuring out where to park my car. And yes indeed, the maps are great. But, all those trail descriptions are way too tedious for my ADD mind. Who really cares?

P.S. Why is this thread so long?

Well, here's a brief synopsis:

Please buy a guidebook so you're prepared for hikes.
Please don't ask lame questions that a guidebook could answer.
"Guidebooks are good"
"I made a Pemi-loop website"
"Guidebooks don't answer everything"
"I'm mad"
"You're mean for saying people shouldn't ask any questions"
"Be nice, now..."
"IIRC, HTML = ROTFLOL"
"WMG has useless elevation info"
"No, you're wrong"
"Maps are cool"
"Tripoli Road may or may not be open in winter"
"Guidebooks discriminate against the illiterate"
"Sapblatt can read minds"
"More guidebooks are good"
"Steve Smith is cool"
"Brief argument about needing food and water more than a clue about where you're going"
"Requisite Gary Moody reference"
"Google it"
"Random nudity in VT reference"

Does that about sum it up? Anyone got anything else to add? :D :D
Don't you want to go back and read the whole thread, now?

Yeah, I have one more thing to say. The freakin' guidebook doesn't tell me which trailheads I can ride me bike to in summer but not winter. One of these days I'm gonna wanna finish the NH48 (Eric threatened to beat me if I don't) and I need something that is gonna give me this info.

Well, I would but , you see, it's like this... my license plate lights are like way overdue to be rotated, so, instead of reading this thread right through I went to the garage and they rotated the little bulbs for me with their surgeon hands.

But later on, while waiting for the anesthetic to take effect as I sit quietly awaiting to have my hemorrhoids burnt off by a blue flame I just might distract myself by reading it.

I once suspected that might have ADD for real. I was going to check it out but then I started hiking a list in the NE and well, you know...
