Sure Terri, the more the merrier... make sure you bring your climbing gear and a 50lb pack for mt Tremper! :) I'll post more when it gets closer to the day.

Jay

P.S went outside in my back door and rescued my paddling gear (in a large duffle bag) off a 8' retaining wall using a Z-pulley system and 'biners (don't have pulleys). :)

Are there any other VFTTers who are attending the dinner but are not signed up for Jay's table? I have 2 people right now for a new table. Let me know if there are any others out there. I have to know by end of day Wednesday as I am hoping to do some printing on Thursday night.

hikes for dinner weekend

Lone, Rocky, BC and Friday would be good ones for the guys to get done certainly, but going in via the Neversink at that time is probably not a great idea. Harry doesn't need Table and Peek, but Adrian does. So, maybe spot a car at Peek trail head, go in via Moon haw and out Peek.

The 4 peaks on the Devil's Path on Sunday would be good.

Those are 2 bigs hikes, so I would suggest just doing Rusk on Saturday (about a 4 mile bushwhack) which would be a bit of a break and allow plenty of time to get showers (yes Harry, a shower) and then make the cocktail hour.

Anybody up for going with them? I can probably do Sunday...at least part of it. Saturday I have to be at the restaurant early to get everything set up.

Yup...I'm the planner.

Hike the 115 I am up for both or either
What ever you guys feel like doing. I would rather do the longer hike on Saturday but I am flexible.
What ever the out of towners want to do. Hey wait a minute I am a out of towner myself.
Dawn, Harry, Adrian what ever you want to do let me know, I am there with you.
Are you guys camping or getting a motel? I was going to camp but a shower if we do a long Saturday hike is a good thing.

Al

Dawn, count me in for dinner. I can not get there until late Friday and I am hoping to join Harry and group for some good climbs on Saturday and Sunday. Do you have any suggestions for a place to stay???????

Just an update, these are the folks I have at my table:

Jay H
Tom Rankin
MCorsar (Matt)
TMax (Terri)
Funkyfreddy (Fred)
Hermit (Ralph)
Maddy H
Coldfeet (David)
Fu Jow Pai (Josef)
ajtiv (Al)

I know Margaret and Warren are going but no idea if they already have a table in mind or not.

I am staying at Ralph's hut and we are bushwacking on Sunday to Samuel's point and to Wittenberg. Saturday, I am thinking of going to do Mt Tremper, but hey, I might be convinced otherwise. I have never done Mt Tremper and if the weather is nice, it looks fun.

Jay

Yup Jay, I've got that table set (so to speak).

Ed, I'll add you to the table with Harryk and Spongebob. Have you signed up for the dinner officially (the list is at home).

Anybody else?

As for the hikes....I'm wondering if the hike described for Friday wouldn't be better to do later in the year. There are certainly a lot of other options. Maybe North Dome and Sherrill or Bearpen and Vly?

Al, the reason for the short hike on Saturday is to make the dinner on time and if there are going to be 2 long hikes, a short hike for the day in between might be nice.

Al and Ed, I'll send a note on places to stay.

Dawn what ever you want to do I'll tag along.
this means I finally get to hike with a crazy Kanadian and spongeBOB?
Harry how much beer do I have to carry?
Al

HarryK, I hear Adrian has cooties.... Ewwwwww... Pfffttttttt.

Don't forget you're sharing a car with me and Guy in Seattle, don't make me wear my horns.

Jay

;) who am I kidding, I think I'll wear them for the entire trip. I know team SliDevil will be well represented in the horn department.

Ok Harry you got me I was going to PM you with my condolences.
Anyway I would hike with you beer or no beer.
I am probably not coming up until Saturday morning.
Post what hike you are doing and I will meet you at the trailhead.

Thought i'd bump this up. Lots of news about roads closed and it's supposed to rain on thurs. any definate plans yet?..I'm supposed to try Balsam but would like a backup if it's cxled do to conditions.

I am planned for a mini Devil's Path traverse with harryk and others on saturday.

As far as the roads go, we wont really know til Friday since we don't know how this rain that is predicted on thursday/friday will accumulate. I'd image by friday, this past weekend's rains will have receded to not be a factor, except for cases of real physical damage, i.e. Woodland Valley Road.

If that is truly washed out, I wouldn't think that would be passable by this weekend. According to Ralph, he says Rt 28 in Kingston is open, CR214 in Phoenicia is open. CR42 is still blocked.

If you're doing Balsam, Be careful if you are planning on hiking it from Rider Hollow as the trail to the col between Haynes/Eagle and Balsam crosses a stream a couple times back and forth. Might want to consider McKenley Hollow or perhaps taking the trail before the leanto at Rider Hollow that goes towards Belleayre (the trail starts before you have to cross a little steel bridge) and then making the right to get to Balsam.

Jay

OK, it's getting close, and it looks like we may have reasonable weekend weather after all. Maybe a little more rain Thurs. then just clouds on the weekend if we're lucky. I don't think Ulster County can afford any more rain!

I still haven't decided what to do Saturday. I may just hike in the 'Gunks so as to avoid driving up 32 to hike, back down 32 to shower/change, and then back up again to the dinner. I've also been wanting to get down to Schunemunk Mt. so that's an option too. If I do hike in the Catskills Saturday, maybe I'll just do the ol' gas station bathroom-clean-up instead of driving all the way back to NP for a shower.

I'm curious, does anyway have any definite plans yet?
What's the start time for Harry's DP traverse? I would consider doing IH/Twin, but probably not the whole thing.

Matt

Harry and Ed are going to be in the area on Friday (Ed, friday night) but I'm coming up early saturday morning. The idea as of now is to meet at Prediger Rd at 7:30am. Ed and Harry are going to try to spot a car friday night so it's quicker on saturday.

That's the plan, Stan. If I'm wrong, somebody please tell me!

Jay

I'll probably take the bus up on Sat. and was wondering how far the dinner is from the bus station? If the weather is nice I would love to go for a good hike on Sunday, posted a ? about Van Wyck to see if anyone is interested. ;)

It's about 3 miles (rough guess). You want to keep heading into town on Washington Ave. (Assuming you are taking Trailways, you are on Rt. 28 / Washington Ave.). This intersects with Rt. 32 South. About a mile down 32, the Hillside Manor is on the left.

I'm sure there are taxis waiting at the bus station in the middle of the afternoon. What time are you getting there? If it's convenient, I might be able to pick you up. I was planning to arrive in Kingston around 3:50 PM. Send me a message offline if you want to.

FYI: The bus stop was unreachable Sunday from the Thruway, due to the flood. So, if we get a lot of rain, call the bus company and make sure the bus is in fact running...

Jay and Harry-

I'll probably decide what to do Saturday about 3 minutes before I fall asleep Friday night, but I may be there at Prediger Rd. I won't be up for the entire traverse w/ you peak-eating maniacs, but I might do Indian Head and possibly also Twin, then head back down Jimmy Dolan Notch to my car. It would be an appropriate hike for dinner day, since Indian Head was my 1st Catskill High Peak. If I'm up, I'll try to be there by 7:15, if I'm not there by 7:30, forget it and hit it. Either way I'll see you Saturday PM.

Matt

PS One more ? for Harry-Are you going to take the DP up to Indian Head, or will you just go up Jimmy Dolan Notch right at the beginning of the hike? Taking the DP gives you the lookouts on the east side, below the summit, but just taking JD Notch would trim a bit of mileage.
