I hate to sound negative about this latest decision, and I never felt that the towers degraded my "wilderness experience"; but the DEC has just been handed a huge "unfunded mandate" to work with whatever friends groups form to help restore the towers. Given that DEC funding has been cut time and again and given that this high profile project will probably take precedence over other projects, the only question is what other stewardship activities will suffer.

The APA can rezone and allow the towers to stay, but I doubt that the APA has the ability to squeeze more funding out of the New York State budget to fund this project. With over 15 towers either restored or slated for restoration, I stand by my previous statements that these towers are no needed and should be removed.

The Press-Republican story overstates the case a bit. No vote has been taken on the towers' fate, though the APA is leaning toward keeping them if legal and fiscal questions can be resolved.

To all those who lobbied to save these 2 towers -
Once the official decision is made to not remove the towers, it will be time to step forward to donate money and labor toward the restorations.
