Do you drink alcohol on a hike

I will drink if it's an overnight.

Which is not to say that there wasn't a bottle of wine for the group lunch at the summit or view point.

Not yet.

Always have a cold one waiting back at the car, though. Does anybody know if the DEC Rangers will nail you for drinking at the trailhead, if you're not in your car? Finished hiking Marshall on a hot August day and was parched, but a gregarious ranger engaged us in conversation for over 20 minutes when we got to the car...I practically escorted him to his truck, so I could pop a cold one. Maybe I should have offered him a beer? :p

simulated altitude

due to a lack of extreme altitude in these parts, me and my companeros generally imbibe. We are all in training for an eventual run at the Himalayas :D.

In order to prepare ourselves for the extreme conditions and O2 depravation, we vigorously train using a combination of Beam, Grittys Hampshire Ales and copious quantities of PBR.

We conduct our research in the hopes that mankind will benefit from our self-sacrifice.
All test results have been inconclusive. Further testing will be necessary.

No, but sometimes it looks like maybe I do.

Wait - one exception. Brought some champagne for Brian's completion of his 4's and followed old admonitions of the "clean plate club" i.e. empty the bottle, but can't waste, so didn't pour the extra on the ground.

I didn't start hiking until I got sober 17 years ago. Got a lot done without it!!!

This poll does not close until June 14, 2010, so I predict that this thead may go many more than 4 pages. The only time that I will drink a PBR is after a hike with Ed Hawkins and he hands me one; usually it is only IPAs and the like for me, but mostly after a hike and not during. But, I am saving a couple of cans of Dale's Pale Ale for a special summit occasion TBD. :)

I hear ya. I started my nehh peakbagging effort about 18 mo ago. A small motivating factor was to hit the hay a little earlier on weekend nights so I wouldn't do 12 oz curls til the sun came up. In hindsight it worked well in the beginning but my alter ego figured out I could do both. Who am I to blow against the wind??

Cheers to post #50 on the thread

No, just Neil because he can't make up his mind. Don't you hate those people!:p

I voted for every option because I could. Anyone who takes this poll and thread seriously probably voted no and thereby unwittingly fell into the cleverly laid trap of becoming subjects for a scientific study conducted by the mad doctor Wu.

Btw, one thing I would never abuse on a hike is heroin but that wasn't a poll choice. Anyway, look what it did to Jimi H.

I voted no. I have never drank anything alcohol before, during or after a hike. Or for that matter, any other time of the year. It's one of those things I never had any use for.
