I like Marshmallow Fluff, but i have not really had it since chidlhood. So I don't love it, but i kinda like it. If someone gave me a marshmallow and peanut butter sandwhich, i totally would not turn it down. I like the the really fluffy posts as well. Why not?

My favorite one's might be like .....

1. How fast do you have to run to outrun a bear while covered with honey?
2. Canadian beer- Can you bring it over the border if you are coming or going from the ADK's? And is it really more bang for the buck, ehhh?
3. Is it ok to hike in pink attire if you are a male? Is neon ok?
4. Have any little people, aka "midgets" hiked the 67's? Cuz I like little people, and I love hiking. Put em together, it would be awesome!

all these are thoughts in my ADD riddled mind that I would like answered. I have all that other stuff down cold, like what clothes to wear, what foods to eat, how do i pitch a tent on the side of the mt, blah blah blah, etc...

Fluff Recipe

Broiled Fluffer-Nutter

2 pieces of crappy no nutritional value white bread
several tablespoons of crunchy peanut butter
several tablespoons of fluff (generic is probably fine for all of this)

Put the bread on a cookie sheet. Spread peanut butter on each piece equally. Then spread the fluff over top of the peanut butter.

Place cookie sheet into the broiler part of the oven. Broil on high until fluff is golden brown like a perfectly toasted marshmallow. If you're doing anything else at the time (silly multi-tasker!) make sure to set a timer for just a couple minutes or the creation will be destroyed by burnination and you'll have to start all over.

This is truly delicious in a naugty, I shouldn't be eating this kind of way. Yum.

Ummm...does anyone have an idea how to make do this recipe in the back country? (that's my tie-in to hiking).

I haven't had one of these treats in ages.

Also...while I was disappointed in the closure of the "light bulb" joke post...it was very poetic and so I appreciate Dave's artistic ability to add to the joke! It was beautifully funny and inevitable really if you think about it!

I'm going to try to keep this short. Fluff? Keeping fluff to a minimum is THE reason I started this site. I was so sick of how useless the usenet forums (newbies can google it) that I started the fourms here 12 years ago. My rules have never changed and they will not change. In my mind, what makes this site stand out is the fact that it is tightly moderated and stays on topic.

For an idea of what a lack of moderation is like, just read this entire thread. The majority of posts are "fluff" with no info. If this had been a serious topic and people tried to read it to actually get info then most people would give up because there was too much fluff. This thread also is a prime example of how if left unchecked fluff would take over the site. People see fluff and they think well if they posted that fluff then I can post my fluff. Left unchecked it gets out of control in a hurry.

This site exists for the exchange of useful information. It is not a playground. I have been saying those same words for 12 years. I'll say them for another 12 if I do not lose my patience.

Now this is a community and there is a large percentage of us that know each other and there will always be some fluff posts. This is certainly not a sterile lab environment. It is however, again, not a playground.

As for fund raisers, I used to allow people to post about them but aside from BTS fund raisers those posts are strictly off topic and it is clearly stated in the rules. It is certainly not because I only like one charity and do not see other causes as worthy or because I have "dishonest" intentions in any way. Anyone who knows me would strongly disagree with that statement.

The policy change was made due to a certain well known charity fund raiser that caused many members here to feel that they were misled and that they money they had donated was not used appropriately. I can not allow the members of my site to get hit up for a fund raiser and then feel like they got ripped off. Dave, Alan, and myself can not check out the finances of every fund raising event that people want to post here. For the safety of our members the policy was changed to prevent any future problems.

All of this was explained to the original poster of the fund raising thread that was deleted a little while back. The person understood the reasons behind the policy and as far as I know had no ill will about the situation.

I have full confidence in the fiscal responsibility of the Brain Tumor Society. I also have reasons to raise funds for them. Most of us have "pet" charities for one reason or another. Who knows, maybe I'll end up with colon cancer like my brother and someday I'll be saying "darn, I should have raised money for the colon tumor society". At any rate, BTS is my charity of choice for fund raising through VFTT. I run this site out of my pocket. A site this size requires a stable internet provider and lots of bandwidth. I spend about $500 - $600 out of my pocket a year running this site. I do not pass the hat for myself, but I do ask people to donate directly to BTS once a year for the bike ride and again for the hikes that JayH organizes. I ask people to donate and in no way force anyone or treat anyone differently if they do not donate.

If I didn't run the site, I could take my $600 and just give it to the BTS. However if I spend my $600 on the site and the members of this site donate a collective total higher than that directly to the BTS then it somehow justifies (to me) the money I spend running the site.

Well, that was certainly not short but I feel strongly about the rules on this site and how it is managed. All of this sort of reminds me of my hometown. It was a quiet coastal New England town with deep roots in fishing and farming. The city folks visit and say "wow, this is just beautiful. I want to live here because it is so nice." They move in, build a big McMansion where corn used to grow, and then quickly say "gee, in the city we used to have this and that and the other. We don't have any of that here. We need to change this place so it is more like the city." The quick version is "I like it here, let's change it."

Well, there are plenty of cities to live in. There are plenty of websites to post anything you want on. As long as I run this site it will remain to have a primary focus on the exchange of useful information. There will be a little bit of social fluff thrown in, but not a lot. After all, it's my site and I feel almost as strongly about the site as I do about my hometown. Now if I only had some control over my hometown...it would still be corn fields, dairy farms, and lobster boats.

Thank you, Darren.

We have disagreed on many issues over the years, and at one time I took a "leave of absence" of one or two years during which I did not post here. But I returned, because under your leadership this site did stay close to its original intent of rec.backcountry.useful.

Any community needs some fluff to leaven the mix. The real issue is how to balance fluff and substance. I hope that we will find a more reasonable balance.

Dave,

It is fine to ask what the "community" wants. But do you want the inmates to run the asylum?????

I choose to look upon this site like a grocery store. I work my way up and down the aisles and pick out what I want and leave the rest. Some days there are some great specials. While on others there aren't. I appreciate the wealth of advice and experiences offered, religiously follow the trail conditions, and ignore to the best of my ability the solipsistic posts.

Well put Tom, I like the analogy and I'm pretty much with you on that one.

Carmel and Darren,

Thanks much for those posts. I didn't know a few things about VFTT. I'll be sure to donate to BTS at the next VFTT fundraiser. When is the next bike ride?

Also, I'll heed the reminder of the site rules and intent. Shout-outs to both of you and the mods for this site.

General observation : 1) Criticizing the style of someone else's website is like telling them their taste in music is wrong. 2) "No good deed goes unpunished"...Suffering criticism about the way in which you do a good deed will hopefully enhance your accomplishment.

Happy Trails :)

FYI, there is not ONE LEGITIMATE, WELL RUN CHARITY anyone could possibly mention that darren does NOT support. That is an asinine statement...or perhaps maybe you were miscommunicating. Yes, none of us can choose to financially support ALL charities, but how can you criticize ANY LEGITIMATE, WELL RUN charity? That is some BAD juju right there. .

I respectfully stand corrected!

How is the got fish thread fluff. It is talking about a recreational activity in the mountains. Fishing is a major part of the outdoors and I know a lot of people who really enjoy it. We were talking about places to fish and the flies and types of fishing methods. I think this thread is fluff. -Mattl

What constitutes (or doesn't make) Fluff, I think, is in the eye of the beholder.

One common working definition seems to be, "if it's not what happens to interest me, then it is Fluff."

Using that definition, all the "list" and peakbagging obsessive threads here are Fluff, in my opinion. Likewise, anything that pertains to overnight backpacking now constitutes Fluff, for me, since I've become exclusively a dayhiker.

On the other hand, any thread dealing with post-hike refreshments, especially of the adult liquid variety, is anything but Fluff, to me. That's real (to mix a metaphor) meat-and-potatoes stuff, based on my own impulses and interests.

My Fluff-non-Fluff list provided above is far from exhaustive. I do have interests that reach beyond quaffing adult beverages. It's necessary to explain that because I don't want anybody to get a wrong impression or reach an erroneous conclusion ...

W/o trying to second guess the 'list' of fluff, it seems to me that the poster was simply looking at titles. Titles are often mis-leading (like the Wedding Bells thread, oops! ). I did not take offense, because I assumed he was talking about titles, rather than content.

This is a hiking site. Fishing isn't hiking, therefore fishing is fluff. Trailrunning on the other hand is hiking very fast and therefore not fluff. 'Course if you're talking about hiking to a fishing hole, then it ceases to be fluff. Likewise, if you're hiking into a hunting post or if you're hiking for the reason us Italians hike, to make people "disappear", then it's not fluff.

That's one of my biggest gripes. Every year, you have to bring stoolies farther and farther into the woods. Ya' see, "Leave No Trace" has a different meaning for us. ;)

Hey Sapblatt... leave the gun. Take the cannolis. :D

The thread was about hiking to fishing areas. Most of the thread was about remote ponds and streams like at thirteen falls which is about 9 miles in, which makes it not fluff. There are more activities that go along with hiking then just the walking aspect. -Mattl

Let's just all remember that the website's name is VIEWS from the TOP.

To me, that essentially means getting to the top of a mountain for the view, i.e. hiking, peakbagging, taking pictures of the views, and celebrating the effort it took to get there.

If you want to run to the top of the mountain, fine. If you want to fish from the top of the mountain, fine. If you want to eat fluff on top of the mountain, fine. If you want to get married on top of the mountain, fine.

If I want fishing advice I'll go to the fishing message board. If I want running advice I'll go to the running message board. If I want food advice I'll go to the food message board. If I want wedding advice, I'll go to the wedding message board.

To me, I don't expect VFTT to cater to all of my needs... it is a nice community where I interact with people that share information about ONE of my interests. I don't need to make VFTT cater to ALL of my interests, and I hope others can see it this way, too.

I think that's a bit more strict than was intended. This site celebrates all sorts of activities in the outdoors: bushwacks to viewless peaks, skiing a remote wooded glade, explorations by kayak of ponds and streams, fishing, photography, XC tours on old woods roads, mountain biking, camping, ice climbing, rock climbing, geocaching, short rambles with children, they're all part of the mix. IMO, "the Top" isn't a physical summit, it's more philosophical, a metaphor for getting out to where ever you want to be. Along the way we talk about gear, experiences, hardships, adventures, history, food, good times, silly times, group gatherings, music, and science.

I think it's good that we have few hard and fast rules. The site is too dynamic to try and nail things down like that. There's a quote from Dr Who (to bring in some fluff) that I think sums up my philosophy here:
- Are you serious?
- If you mean, am I serious about what I do, the answer is yes. If you mean, am I serious about how I do it, the answer is no.

Interesting. I interpreted Views to be both opinions of members, as well as the visual payoff from hiking.

So now, I am curious, what is Views intended to mean?

Thanks,
Marty

Methinks that non-moderator folks who need (or wish to offer) guidance on what's appropriate would do well to actually read the forum-specific stickies provided by our host.

Me, I can take my fluff, albeit in small doses. (But a fluffer-nutter sandwich, OTOH, would make me gag. I guess it's a New England kind of thang . . . )
