This was the second time I did the Elkhorn 50K. The race is held in the Elkhorn Mountains outside of Helena, MT. The first time I ran it in 2002 it was 106 degrees in Helena. This time the temps were in a more acceptable 80's.
I went up Friday evening with my friend Charles Steele who has run the race many times. On Friday we attended the pre-race festivities with pasta party, door prizes and a 1-hr course walk through.
Many people camp at the startiing line since an early start (5am for 50-miles and 7am for 50K).
I will let the pictures tell the story.
In Montana people like to shoot (sign by the start area):
At ultra-races in Montana you usually have Native Americans and cowboys running:
And fast and beautiful ladies:
Fran Selnitz (winner of Devil's Backbone 50-M) chatting with one of the organizers.
Pre-race activities:
Other pre-race activities:
Examples of car-camping in Montana:
The 50K field trying to stay warm......later that was not a problem....
Gentle uphill to start with:
Then more serious uphill:
Mats on stellar trails around 8,000' after the first 3,000' climb:
A good picture of the terrain. You are coming in on the ridge from the right and then dip down to the aid station (tiny dot in middle of picture). Then back up on the next ridge where I'm taking the picture from:
Montana super oldboy Bob Hayes ran the 50-miler at age 84!
Now that's Shake and Bake!
