Driving north the original plan was up Falling Waters and down OBP, but we had a change of mind. Instead we decided to go up Skookumchuck and down Greenleaf, taking the 2 mile walk on the bike path to the car. The main desire was hit some new trails for Brenda and to avoid crowds. We succeeded on both tacks.

We had a somewhat late start, hitting the trail just before 10:00. There were only 4 cars in the parking lot, the temps were begining to climb and the bugs were coming out. We encountered only one other hiker on the climb up to the ridge; he was heading out and past us about 30 minutes in. No one else on this very nice and green trail. The bugs were pretty nasty, although we didn't get many bites they were swarming everywhere.

We hit the ridge around 12:30 and took a well earned break. Once there we decided that we'd lunch on North Lafayette so we packed up quickly and headed north. While eating lunch we finally saw other hikers headed to and from the Lafayette summit, plus a huge crowd on top. Our little perch was quiet and restful.

After lunch we headed up the to summit where there were 50-75 people. It was quite a shock after the solitude all day. We didn't stay long, headed down the Greenleaf trail to the hut. Along the way we met up with a ski buddy who was hiking up (Hi Marc!) and lots of others on the trail. At the hut we topped up our water, used the restrooms, and headed on down.

Seconds after leaving the hut we were back in solitude. The Greenleaf trail is a bit rough on the descent but it loses elevation fairly quickly. We saw a family climbing up to the hut and then no one else until Eagle Cliffs, where a hiker who we saw on the ridge caught up to us. He was also headed back to Skookumchuck, doing the same loop as us. The rocks at Eagle Cliffs are wonderful, and it offers an exceptional view of the Cannon Cliffs.

From there out is a bit of a slog, the highway is close by the whole time but never seems to arrive. We hit the road at 4:45 and Brenda decided to hang there while I did the bikepath walk to get the car. That took longer than I wanted, nearly an hour, but a peaceful hike. We then hurried back to Boston to make it to a dinner party, we were slightly late.

It's a great loop, one that could be assisted by a bike stash.

Pictures and lots of video to follow.

Dave - Wasn't it a great day up there yesterday! We did the Bridal Path - Ridge - Falling Waters loop. Managed to miss most of the crowds though - they seemed to always be arriving just as we left. One thing we noticed yesterday was that at least 50% of the folks we saw were speaking French.

Too bad we missed you - would have loved to have done a one way starting with you guys.

I would have loved the lift back to my car. :(

Yes, lots of French-Canadians in the hills this weekend, perhaps it's a 3-day weekend in Quebec?

I did the same loop ~2yrs ago. A nice route--escapes most of the crowds. I didn't mind the bikepath walk back to the car, but found the bottom of Greenleaf Tr (paralleling 93) to be a bit of a bother.

Great video Dave!! Love the shot of you and the moss :> Now how do we convince you to come along with us on Mt Jefferson for Flags on the 48? We'd love to see you put that to video!

... and yes, the walk between the two trailheads seems interminable :(
Did it again today, but decided to get the bike path out of the way at the start. So when I got off the Greenleaf Trail my car was waiting for me :)

Ya, Ya... very nice!! Looks like a great day (nice company, too)! The trails looks to be in nice condition -- and I didn't see one bug in the video??

Mo, you must be doing well. Good to know you're out hikin' again. :)

So, it really sucks to be you... leave in the morning, hike the mtns and be back home in the evening!! Just like those Albany-based hikers in ADKland.

Enjoyed the video!

I have done the loop on two occasions, once the way you did it and once counterclockwise. Eagle Pass was a totally different experience at 9 am with sun blasting in from the east. Having only previously descended Greenleaf late in the day I had always thought of as a bit dark and dreary; definitely more cheerful in the morning.

What Dave kindly did not mention was that I was toast by the end of the hike (there's a reason a slug is featured prominently in the video!) and my knees were hurting, so he offered to get the car on his own while I ate ICE CREAM procured at the ice cream shop at the Ex-Old Man viewing area. They closed by the time Dave arrived with the car. :( So I bought his snacks for the ride home. :)

Wadda guy, eh?

It was one fine day.

Bubba,

There may be no bugs in the video, but they are out there :( Thank heaven for DEET :)

Good to be hiking again! Hope to do Slide and Hunter this weekend with a friend who will be finishing the 111.

Great Video!! I did another 'alternate loop' a couple of weeks ago that I failed to report (7/1): Up Greenleaf, to Lafayette/Lincoln/Haystack then onto Liberty and down Liberty Springs. We did spot a car, which made completing the 'loop' much more convenient.

The Greenleaf was a great alternate route up. We were on trail @ 6:50am, and didn't see another soul 'til the hut (on a holiday Sat. AM!!) We were also ahead of most of the overnighters once past the hut. After hitting the peak, we had the Ridge to ourselves save for passing about 3 people. Then we had the Haystack to Liberty stretch mostly to ourselves... on the way down Lib. Springs, we passed many people who looked quite jealous at our descent versus their ascent!

Just another take on the 'classic' Franc Ridge loop. Next up is Skookumchuck to the Old Osseo trail (has any one hit that recently?)

Fantastic video Dave...what a great way to start my day!!!!
Looks like you and Brenda had a fine day as well.

I would rather do it in the opposite direction, as finding where the Old Osseo Trail leaves the current trail is difficult (OK, I have never looked for it really hard).

It is a few years since I have done the Old Osseo Trail, and at the time the lower segment (to Mt. Osseo) was easy to follow; the upper segment much less so. There is a good thread on the subject on the AMC BB.

I secound that idea!!!!!!!!

Thanks all. After writing 12 years worth of static trip reports I'm really getting into this video idea. Perhaps a real video camera is in order some day, and some real video editing software.

There were indeed bugs in the video. I think in the shots around the hut you can see them flitting in and out of view. I'd only done Greenleaf once or twice before, it is quite the enjoyable trail.

I think Mohamed's idea of doing the bike path first is the right way. Nothing like coming off the trail right to your car.

I found the top of the old trail without difficulty in '04. There was also a small cairn at the junction. Watch out--there was a vicious grouse nearby... :)
