Jay,

In the past, we've encouraged other peaks to be covered regardless. This is every American's day, we just try to make sure at least the 48 are covered. Reading this thread would lead you to believe we pull it off every year, but I know that on at least two occasions Adams (along with a couple others) was not covered. Maybe this will evolve, last year we pulled off all 48, but it can be more, we just shoot for not less than the 48.

I'd love to be involved this year. How fast do the peaks go? Are we talking seconds? minutes? hours?

If someone would come with me (Dalraida, Barbarossa, MEB?) I'd bring a flag up to NW Hancock on 9/11. Can we expand it to Trailwrights 72?

If I remember correctly, a lot of the popular peaks were gone within a few hours.

BUT....

Keep in mind MichaelJ's comment on the new sign-up procedure for this year. Even though a peak may have been "spoken for" there will still be slots available for additional people to sign up for that same peak.

Smitty

Smitty is on the mark saying that the popular peaks will be signed up for quickly. But with ten spots available for each peak that leaves 480 slots to be filled. I am quite positive to have at least one person for each peak but if 480 slots were filled, THAT would be beyond words. For that reason, I'd rather we concentrated on the 48. At our planning meeting we did hit on the topic of expanding to other peaks. We all pretty much agreed that the Orginal 48 peaks is what the event is to be focused on. Can folks hit other peaks? Sure, we've had photos of Mt. Marcy flags posted on the site. The focus though is that this is a memorial event which is why I'd rather us stick to the 48.
Prediction: Owl's Head will not be last this year :)

I think it does make sense for the FoT48 to stay focused on the 48. And, I expect to be signing up for one of the 48.

Nonetheless, personally I'd love to see other peaks covered (like Boot Spur and Clay, Monadnock, Welsh and Dickey...) and I certainly wouldn't think that someone who did one of the 48 had memorialized 9/11 better than anyone else and I'd be just as glad to see you and congratulate you at a before or after party if you took some other peak.

Don't forget the sign up starts today. I have noticed some BSA troops have jumped on it already.

Yes, go and sign up! Take an unclaimed peak and be responsible for it, or tag along with a peak that already has a responsible coordinator.

I'm floating this year, so you won't find me on the signup list.

Should anyone know a non-hiking group/person that would be willing to participate, we do have an option for them. We have left Cannon, Washington and Wildcat D reserved for them. These peaks have alternate access to the summit areas and need not be hiked. What we are really hoping for is that a group of veterans can commit to at least one of these peaks. So if you know of anyone feel free to pm me and give me their information. Thanks to everyone at VFTT for their support for this event.

Flags on the 48

When John brought the idea of volunteering to bring a flag up to the summit of a mountain on 9/11 I was thrilled. I feel like this is a great way to not only remember those who were lost on this day, but also a great way to show our patriotism. This is a wonderful idea, and I cannot wait to be a part of it in any way that I can. Thanks for all of the information and the reminder guys! :)
