Double Bow - we are looking forward to meeting you! We agree that Mt Liberty is a great peak for teh occasion and hope that we do it the justice it deserves.

Bondcliff

Bondcliff will be a lovely hike! I can't wait to go! Liberty is of course a perfect Mountain for the occasion. I suspect that it will be VERY busy that day. I hope you bring tissues Bob! I have a feeling that there may be some tears shed up there as well. Tell us how it goes! ;)

Hey Sherpette!

Bondcliff is a magical peak any day of the year! We finished our NH48 list there and hope to save that peak forr last to finish the Winter 48. All of the peaks will be very special place on September 11th. Many a tear will be shed in memory of lost loved ones on all the peaks that day. We've read the guest book from last year a few times and can't get through it with dry eyes.

I hope that SherpaJohn is planning on a really large flag!!

I'll be pulling it up in a radio flyer wagon ;)

Do me proud, John. Bring up a 60' flag and hang it off the cliff.
:)

I think I am going to try and do a hike that day that traverses multiple peaks to really appreciate the day.

9/11 had a pretty close affect on me and I think this will be a great thing to be around/a part of.

I found one online... it only costs $1,700!! If I had the cash.. I'd buy it.

Does 10' x 19' work? or 12' x 18'?

Er ... nevermind, then. I ain't paying it and we definitely do not want "sponsors".

Either of the sizes you mention are fine. If you have any questions about flagpoles or other hanging devices, sign up for the forums on the Flags web site; we have an entire topic for such discussions.

John, there is a flag called the #1. Don't know the dimensions, but we hoisted it only on special occasions at school... it was huge. I'm not sure if it is a Navy thing or accross all branches of the military. Still, I hope everyone keeps in mind flag etiquette when carrying the flag. Don't mean to be a stickler for details, but make sure it is folded before and after. There are some good online sites for proper flag procedures. If eveyrone is going to do it, let's do it right! Not for sticklers like me, but for those who have defended this country, and those lost in 9-11!

Agreed. Taking down a 10' or 20' PVC flagpole in the wind can be tricky, but I have never let the flag fall on the ground when doing it.

To be honest, I can't say as much for the folding; in my concern to keep it off the ground I just folded it into a stuff sack. This year I'll make a point to have two people fold it properly.

Flag Etiquette

Here is information on how to properly fold the US flag: Flag Folding

And how to properly display the flag: Flag Etiquette

And... if you want, here is information on how to purchase a flag that has been flown over the Capitol: Order a flag flown over the Capitol

If you scroll down past the diagrams and directions on how to fold the flag, you will come to the section that describes the Flag Folding Ceremony. Interesting reading. I didn't realize that there was a narrative to go along with the folding and that each fold has a different meaning. (Of course, you will notice quite a few references to God in this section - I wonder how long before someone takes offense at this and tries to get it removed from the narrative?)

Bondcliff? I expected you to take OWL'S HEAD !!!

There are still 7 left, at this writing. Owl's head is one of them.

I think someone like Sherpa John, Stinky Feet, or Kltilton should just sign up for the rest of them and run to them all! :D :D :D

Edit:

Jeez! A Red square for this?!?!? Come on!!! And of course, no comment, or signature. Did you know that Green smilie faces means it's a *joke*?

Seven regular peaks left. The folks that sign up for these peaks are the real heroes of the event.

Some usual suspects that give us trouble:
South Carter, Owl's Head , East Osceola and Wildcat A

Surprised to see:
North Kinsman, North Hancock and South Hancock

I'm trying to devise a plan to leave Sarah on BondCliff early AM so I can run to Owls Head to plop a flag then head back to Bondcliff... then of course... run back to OH to remove the flag. We'll see...

Sherpa John,

Nice patriotic gesture, but the flags are only to be flown from noon till 2:00 (please see our Q/A), so you can't actually leave one on the summit of Owl's Head and pick it up later in the day. But don't worry, with the way things are going with the sign-ups, someone will likely sign up for it within the next few weeks... And if not, MichaelJ will be more than happy to take it on :D

Just to update (and keep this thread fresh), North Hancock has been taken. Thanks Weski2 and Sandi! :)

Michael,

If it so happens that you end up with Owl's Head on 9/10, I'll see if I can leave the family at home and hike it with you. Would be nice to get it off my list of 48 x 2. :D
