Mats started organizing a full Franconia Traverse starting at Lincoln Woods and ending at Skookumchuck. Us mere mortals decided on just hitting the high points of the trip by doing the standard loop up Falling Waters and down OBP.

All that I knew was the MichaelJ, mntpa, and Ski_mom were going to be there at 8:00 but soon after I met Michael there Donna, Bob, Chomp and his cousin Jake all arrived. Michael put on his Micro-Spikes at the trailhead since they're hard to put on once your feet are in your boots, the rest of us bare booted but we were all carrying crampons and/or Stabilicers. The first part of the hike was quickly attacked, the stream crossing low on Falling Waters was a bit tricky. The Falls were gorgeous and the ice was fairly soft, allowing us to stay with bare boots.

I was suffering the after effects of my cold, and spent most of the day in the back of the pack, coughing loudly. Bob was a bit under the weather and he and Donna decided to go their own pace; with the possibility of turning around at the ridge. We made it to Little Haystack around 11:40 and there were those in the group who thought that Mats and his super hiker had already passed through. We grabbed some food in the bright sun and bitter cold, but the winds were very low and the views were to die for.

Along the ridge we just walked and talked and looked. It was fairly cold so we only stopped occasionally, on the summits of Lincoln and Truman (North Lincoln). There wasn't much snow but the icy sections called for a bit of care. We ran into Jason Patrick who was looking for Mats but we weren't sure if they were ahead or behind. Not too many people were up there on such a glorious day but a few groups were doing to the loop. We reached the top of Lafayette around 2:30 and Chomp, Jake, and Dani decided to try to catch up to a group they could see ahead and thought were Mats and Company. If not, they'd hitch back from Skookumchuck to pick up cars.

Mtnpa, MichaelJ and I headed down OBP. There is one section about 10 minutes down from the summit which always wigs me out a bit in winter. It's a left turn on a patch of snow and ice that doesn't have a very forgiving outrun. There were butt slide tracks leading down to a rocky ending; hopefully no one was seriously hurt. We negotiated it without trouble. At the hut we ate more food, drank our soup and tea, and changed some clothing for the final leg. Who should appear there but Donna and Bob! Once they reached the ridge they felt good enough to continue and had a fine time as well.

At the Red Rocks section mntpa and I put on crampons and Stabilicers respectively for the trickier sections. Why we didn't do this earlier I don't know; it made for a much faster journey. We came out to the cars around 4:15 - no need for headlamps today. Amazingly, the Skookumchuck group had already gotten out and been driven to Lafayette Place. I guess I was slowing them down. They had arrived just as Annalisa had been dropped off to pick up her car. She, NH_Mnt_Hiker and Janine had dropped down Falling Waters from the other group, the rest were still coming down Skookumchuck.

Off to the Mountain House for a post-Thanksgiving Dinner that couldn't be beat, several hours of the Discovery Channel, and lots of body parts being rubbed.

Photos are HERE

Thanks Mats for making this hike necessary. :)

It would have ben great to meet up with you guys on the ridge! 17 Santas on Franconia Ridge at the same time :D
The nine Santas starting at Lincoln Woods enjoyed the weather a lot coming over Flume and Liberty and since it was too early to saddle the reindeers we arrived at Little Haystack far behind you :) JasonPatrik told us slightly before Lincoln that you guys probably already had passed Lafayette and headed down towards Greenleaf Hut. I hope some of us got good pix on the bopping red hats along the ridge :)

Trip Report soon from the Lincoln Woods starters.....

Mats

I didn't get to hike with y'all as I was babysitting the niece but I really enjoyed the after party at the Mountainhouse!! Thanks to Mtnmama and Mtnpa for letting us camp (inside) there!! :D

Nice time indeed!!

That group you saw ahead was the Y-Alpine group. We started and ended at the Skookumchuck TH.

And yes, great views on Saturday for sure.

Not possible for the sky to be more blue than that. Great day to spend time on the ridge. Nice pics. During the first crossing which needed to be carefully negotiated I watched from the other side as each found their own way across. One boot went in, but no feet got wet. MichaelJ was the last to cross. As he approached the other side he hesitated to reconsider his route. Just when I thought he was in trouble he burst into song. I believe it was an opera selection. It was even in key. I had a total blast with this crew.

Yea, it was a very good day for sure. Couldn't have asked for better conditions - the weather was cold but not windy, the waterfalls were awesome and the views were as good as it gets. Thanks Mats to coming up with the idea and mtnma and mtnpa for being fantastic hosts. Jake and I had a great time - we were just sorry we had to leave so soon on Sunday. Of course, it was worth it to see the Patriots pull out a squeeker to go 11-0. What a weekend!

You guys keep feeding me with good TR's and pics, it's pure motivation to get back in shape ASAP.

Dani, I bet you're the one who brought the santa claus hat, you have such a great spirit !!

Looks like a great hike. Would Michael or anyone else care to comment on the putting on of the Microspikes. There has been alot of dicussion on this board about the Microspikes and this is the first I've heard that could be interpreted as a negative.

I haven't had any isues putting them on or off. The rubber bands are easily negotiable even in cold weather. You put he front on first and then pull back over the heel. You do som adjustments to make sure they are alligned. 30 - 60 seconds to put them on maybe.....taking them off takes shorter.

Sizing is important to get right in the first place......I had size 11.5 shoes over the weekend and Large MicroSpikes.

This was an AWESOME hike - thank you to everyone for a great time on the ridge and getting together afterwards. Special thanks of course to our wonderful hosts with the mosts. :D

My photo album is almost ready, I just have to stitch a couple panoramas together when I get home from work tonight and then I'll post the link.

Now, as for the Microspikes ... they RULE. No, really, they were amazing. I wore them for the entire hike and only once felt on uncertain footing, crossing a large snowfield on the flank of Lafayette where one slip would have meant a long and injurious slide. Elsewhere, and especially on ice as opposed to packed snow (the spikes are short and so don't penetrate far), I felt very secure and was able to walk easily, even over exposed rock.

I'm a size 10-1/2, which is the cusp of the medium vs. the large size spikes, and I got medium. This was the right decision, since once on my leather boots they were a perfect fit, but getting them on was a little tricky, stretching the rubber over the boot sole. Since I intended to wear them for the whole hike, I just chose to put them on the boots prior to putting the boots on my feet.

Incidentally, my musical selection at the water crossing was inspired by the piece of ice I was standing on breaking off into the brook. As you might imagine, these were not lyrics you'd hear in any Bugs Bunny cartoon.
:D

Sounds like your are at the upper limit of stretch for the size Med. These things are starting to sound like this year's outdoor toy of the year to have. :D

Finally, the slacker gets his photo album posted from the Ridge. Enjoy!

ps - if you do the slideshow, pick 1024x1024 from the pulldown after it starts, otherwise it defaults to postage-stamp size images.

Nice TR!

MJ, great album.

Dave, I could not view your gallery. I only got little blank sqares instead of thumbnails.

happy trails :)
