Came in the mail today!...I followed the rules and got my appliciation in time and not earlier...going 8/15- 8/19 to Chimney pond and Katahdin stream...can't wait....It's a long drive from LI...app 450 miles but this time I'll take 2 days to drive there..will read the threads about the trails....going with my son 14 and daughter 10....hope they don't hate me..

This will be my second summer trip to Maine...last year we camped in Acadia...and it's all because of this site....thx Darren and VFTT community...especially Spencer for suggesting the sites...

Thx Chomp...hey didn't you celebrate a birthday a few days ago?...I didn't rain on your party!...It doesn't matter, so we'll watch the moose swim by our lean to!....and it only rains at the gatherings!

Awesome. You'll all love it there, it's wild and vast and beautiful.
Was Chimney booked all the way until August or did you just pick that date?

Wow - I feel like a deadbeat since I NEVER know when people's birthdays are... I don't know about only raining at Gatherings, but its been a while since I have been to a Gathering with good weather. Even the Barnes Field get-together was plagued by rain.

Seriously, congrats on the reservations and enjoy Chimney Pond!

cbcbd---those are the only days off that I have for my own stuff...and I'm a school teacher!

Chomp...I noticed the birthdays when someone sent me a greetings...and I enjoyed the breakfast you made in Vermont the morning AFTER it rained..

Ivy...would be cool to bump into you and say hello...our group picture of the Fab 5 Cabot trip is on my wall....my first real winter hike...imagine if conditions were worse? I could have easily packed it in and went home, but it was fun to be with a group...

Awesome pics Percious....showed them to my daughter (10)....very cool...liked the finger pics!....can't wait....was that a pic in the lean to or cabin at the end?...I know i'll have a lot of questions soon, but I will have to filter water, right?...Also I read that I need gas cannisters..

Water can be obtained from chimney pond, and yes, you will have to filter. I use a Steripen, which treats the water with ultraviolet.

I am not sure about gas canisters, but I think you may be refering to a regulation for winter camping. Expect to bring a small stove that runs on white gas, propane/butane, or alcohol. Propane stoves are the simplest to operate, but white gas stoves are typically best for parties sized 4 and up.

As for the leanto(s), The first shot of michelle cooking breakfast is at chimney pond, and it is quite cozy for 4 people. Make sure to go to a fabric store and buy about 20 feet of funeral veil material and bring a few safety pins so that you can debugify your sleeping quarters. The black flies can get nasty.

If you are refering to "page 2" of my pictures, the leantos depicted are from Russel pond, a place where the moose roam free.

-percious
