I climed black mtn. near lake george last spring, and what did i see right on the summit but a young girl "riding" her boy friend. This is a very popular climb becouse it is a tourist area and not a real big mtn. She was wailing at the moon. Right behind me came two more hikers, a married couple and all of us were not to happy about it. we had to go to side of summit until it was over. In my opinion it is very rude of people to do this. This year I have a digital camera and will take a picture if i see it again. last year I had a film camera and would not be able to get it developed.

Why, oh why, oh why would you (or anybody else) take pictures of a strange couple gettin' it on who you happen to stumble across while hiking? Think about it. What are you going to do with the photos, anyway, that isn't a touch voyeuristic or otherwise perverse? Turn 'em over to the cops? (And then what do you think will happen?) Somehow, it escapes me how offensively weird behavior by someone else might justfy weird behavior on my own part.

I was thinking maybe create a slide show. That way we could teach the kids from the safety of our own homes. Why risk taking them out hiking with all of this going on in the woods?

Re canine leadership v. dominance, make of this what you will. It's written by a DVM-animal behaviorist. The part that resonated for me is this: "Thus the mark of a true leader is the ability to control without force. And, in fact, wild animals who rely on brute force to maintain their status typically get eliminated from the gene pool because this approach requires so much energy." Interesting theory that humans project our ideas about who's leading a pack on dogs.

Practically all [naked people having sex in a public place] will cede the leadership position and all the negative fear-based behaviors that go with it if [people who stumble upon these naked people having sex in a public place] consistently relate to them as leaders long enough for the [naked people] to internalize this change in the pack structure.

Without endorsing the idea of photographing the offenders, it isn't too much of a stretch to imagine that the risk of being photographed and having those photographs given to law enforcement for whatever purpose they might use them for might influence some offenders to get a room, or a tent, at least. Other forms of video surveillance have sometimes been effective in stopping other bad behaviors.

I can think of two reasons why people would engage in this sort of behavior: 1. they can't even imagine that someone else would come by so they think they have a good degree of privacy. 2. They are exhibitionists.

I would think # 2 is more likely. If it is taking a picture would only feed into their jollies.

Talking from experience.... I've worked as security for "events" where my prime responsibility was preventing this sort of behavior.

can't we all just agree that sex outdoors is a wonderful thing some people enjoy and its completely inappropiate near trails or other people? it almost seems like some people are arguing 2 different things. of course its not cool to step right off trail and get naked, but off into empty wilderness it should be all good. to each his own, to live and let live always also includes respect of others.

No, Bob, actually I was commenting upon how people react to irritating behavior, whether they try to dominate or not. Leaders can let go. Grumpy stated the leadership position some time ago. I have nothing more to add.

No, Weird_Al, you are not being totally uptight about this.

I think for some of us, especially those with younger children, we're just getting worn down by this stuff. After the Viagra commercials at half-time, or magazines in the checkout isle telling our wives "How to give him the sex he really wants", or dumb-ass boys with their pants around their ankles and slutty girls looking like bent over plumbers (while standing up), is it too much to ask to be able to go someplace (other than a church, and that's even questionable it seems lately) without having to deal with sexual issues in front of our children?

I'm tired of "teaching moments".

Oddly enough, while hiking in the Catskills (near North Mtn.) we came upon a woman sunbathing topless while her husband (or whatever) was cooking breakfast. This didn't bother me because there was nothing sexual about it (other than what I conjured up in my mind
