On 7/30/1999 while hiking from Falls Dam Road to the Kennebec River on the AT in Maine I was attacked by a hawk that had built its nest right on the trail before the hikers started arriving. It flew right at me and I used my poles over my head to keep it at bay. I was soon out of its danger zone and it left me alone. I later heard that mine was just one of quite a few incidents at this point on the trail.
I think some of your terms are a bit sketchy...like "attack" and "criminal". Being bitten by skeeters or black flies, come on now- we're just on the menu.
