Side rant: I think of Backpacker as one of those "aspirational" magazines, like for golf or tennis or photography, aimed at people who wish they knew something about the subject but don't. (Classic sign: regular features of "The Ten Most ___ in America", eg, Ten Hardest Dayhikes -- reminds me of Ten Ways to Improve your Backswing.) Having a high subscription rate says something about the aspirations of the local culture, but I wonder how much it correlates with actual backpacking.
