Just a head's up for anyone planning activities in the Indian Lake region starting this weekend. The Tops supermarket there will be closing Saturday, 8/27. I don't know if that means it won't be open at all that day, or that when it closes on 8/27, it won't be open afterwards. Anyway, plan for your provisions accordingly.
The market is supposed to open under a new name, maybe IGA, a month later. I think the month gap is to give the new management the uppper hand over (ie, "screw") current and future workers. It also messes with the local residents. But I digress. But I was done anyway.

I think that all the Tops are changing, The ones in Western New York are becoming Martins. The one in my town has been torn up since the spring. They are trying to remodel and stay open at the same time. It is a huge mess, maybe they are trying to avoid this, but its closing must be a hardship as the next nearest supermarket has to be a considerable distance.

My guess would be North Creek, but that one may be a Topps too. Topps bought out many of the small village Grand Unions when they went into bankruptcy.

The store in North Creek is also a Tops ...

the other alternative is Charlie John's Big M down in Speculator.

Here's the press release from Tops ...

TOPS SELLS INDIAN LAKE STORE
Buffalo, NY - Tops Markets announced today that the Indian Lake Tops located on Main Street in Indian Lake has been sold back to its landlord. The closing is expected to take place in late August.
The landlord will in turn sell the store to local businessman Richard Dywer, who will close the store on August 27, 2005 for a remodel and reopen in the fall. All associates who currently work at the location will be given the opportunity to work for the new owner.

Tops purchased the store from Grand Union in 2001.

Tops Markets, LLC, headquartered in Williamsville, NY is one of four retail operating companies under Ahold USA, and is a division of Giant Food Stores in Carlisle, PA. Tops currently operates 152 Tops Markets, 2 Martin's Super Food Store. With nearly 18,000 associates, Tops serves a three state market area. For more information about Tops, visit the company's website at www.topsmarkets.com.

What is the name of the supermarket (I forgot) right outside of Lake Placid on Rt. 86 (located in the "strip" with the dollar store, liquor store)? That's where I plan to get provisions next week.

I don't think so, Rivet. I believe the Price Chopper is in the newer "mall" on the left side of 86 going toward Ray Brook. The supermarket I am thinking about is on the left side of 86 going into Lake Placid (there is a traffic light here and I recall a car wash(?)). There is a Rite Aid there as well. (This is going to drive me nuts today!)

It is a Tops, :) and it's not scheduled to close. (I just called the Rite Aid next to it-had to get it over with!).

Thanks - happy hiking!

I wasn't expecting much response to my posting, but since there's some interest, I'll throw in 2 more juicy tidbits:
1) There's also a notice in the Indian L. Tops that during the month of September, there will be a bus to the North Creek Tops on Wednesdays at 10:30AM. I'm sure that will fit in perfectly with your mid-week hiking plans, regardless of how long the bus stays in North Creek. :)
2) I heard from a cashier at the Tupper Lake Tops that it will become a Price Chopper.
3) bonus tidbit: There are currently no plans to open a Wegmans in Wanakena. :D

Here's another press release about what Tops is planning ... ALL of the stores are for sale, and, yes, the Tupper Lake store has been purchased by Price Chopper. The other stores that Price Chopper purchased are not in the Adirondacks.

Buffalo, NY - Tops Markets announced today that it will seek buyers for its 31 stores located in Eastern New York and the Adirondack region. Tops announced that it has reached agreement to sell six of the 31 Eastern New York stores to Price Chopper. The closing of the transaction is expected early in the 4th quarter.
The decision to sell the 31 stores is part of Tops' long-term strategy to redefine its core markets. The stores stretch from the northern Adirondack area of Champlain through to Rome and Utica, New York in eastern New York State (see attached list).
