Newton, the border collie lost on Wildcat Moutain a few days ago, was found today at 1:30pm,walking along route 16, a mile from AMC! The owner said the spot was close to where car was originally parked for the hike. Kate, his human campanion, said Newton will be the ring bearer at her wedding in August. Very happy ending!

Excellent news.

I've heard similar stories in the past about missing dogs showing up in weird places. I heard on story about a dog who went missing from the Marcy Dam area in the High Peaks in the Adirondacks... the dog was spotted on the summit of Algonquin Peak before being reunited with it's owners... curious that a dog would climb a 5,000 foot peak on it's own accord! :)

Last summer, I was camped at Sampson Lake in the West Canada Lakes Wilderness (also in the Adirondacks) with a few friends and their dog, a Malamute. During the early evening, right about sunset, the dog disappeared and we didn't see her again for a few hours. She eventually showed back up in the campsite just as we were getting ready to give up calling for her and go to bed. The next day, we hiked three miles farther down the trail to South Lake. We got there to find a group staying in the lean-to, who commented on the dog being the same one who had shown up in their campsite the previous evening, giving them quite a scare!

Perhaps it accompanied hikers who were friendly to it. We've climbed a number of mountains with dogs who apparently live near trailheads. There's always the possibility of a handout!
Our current dog Leo often wants to go with the dogs who pass us on the trail.

They so often go back to where they originally started, even though it might take a few days.
It surely is a very happy ending. These stories always bring tears to my eyes. Relief the another good dog has been reunited with his loved ones.

I hate lost dog stories and have looked for a few I heard about although I never found one. It reminds me of a dog I met in CO. There is a 14er named Mt.Quandry. This is a beautifull peak near breckenridge and its quite easy to climb (for a 14er). Anywho, I liked this peak and its one Ive repeated, on this day a dog met me at the trailhead, although I love dogs I tried in vain to discourage him from following me to no avail. I lost him at over 13,000ft but met up with him again on my descent. Turns out this dog summits this peak on many occasions with many groups and lives near the base, seems like he just likes to follow people for something to do.

Yay!

So glad to hear it!

Woof!!!

In 2008, Horton's humans suggested that their dog had topped out on Quandary over 1500 times. This article has been posted here before, but I really like the part about Horton being very choosy with those that he selects to accompany on summit climbs.

Good news. Thanks for posting this update.

Was the dog still wearing its pack when found?
