I have heard of the "smear" being used out west in the Sierras...

Ok clue me in to this one... #7 ...where ("Elsewhere this is acceptable") does this take place?

The desert.

The soil is too dry for fast decomposition. Spreading one's feces on a rock allows the sun to degrade them.

The basic priciple is to dispose of wastes by the method which minimizes the impact in the local environment.

Informative book: "How to **** in the Woods", by Kathleen Meyer.

While the smear technique sounds like an election campaign tactic it is a bona fide method of protecting the environment. I don't know if anyone has scientifically studied its effectiveness. I first read about it in a guide book on scrambling. It works best at altitude on a south facing slope. NEVER do it on the summit

I actually used the technique once and found it to be rather disgusting and malodourous but it seems to make sense to let UV radiation and dehydration take care of things. (To get rid of the TP has anyone ever heard of the swallow technique?)

ok ok ok enough crap has been spread around here....

1. I should take the antler or leave it.

2. Smear or bury.

The answer to both questions is simple, a definitive "it depends". ;)

May I post something relevent? Has anyone ever heard of using anlters to test for heavey metals and other toxins in moose/ deer populations?

If an assay was done on a moose antler taken 50 years ago and compared with a recent antler some trends could be noted. Much the same way hair is used for heavey metal toxicity studies.

The bird skin collections in the Smithonian and other museums have been used in a similar fashion. Just a random thought.

Ok I get how question 2 relates to Depends, but how about question 1?
Oh, on a lot of things, but mainly on
- Where you are, such as
private land vs national parks(a definite no-no)
on trail or in the middle of nowhere
etc.
- your karma (ie. how closely do you choose to follow LNT principles?)

But what if you are all out of karma? :D

Ok, I didn't want to do it but the last several posts of mindless dribble just killed this thread. Once again, I will say this is not a chat room.
