Ongoing SAR effort in Baxter

For those who don't follow Baxter's FB page, there is a massive search (eighty people, including Baxter, Maine Warden Service, MFS, CAP + volunteers) for an overdue hiker who was last seen leaving the summit of Coe northbound Thursday afternoon, going ahead of his group.

Marston and Coe trails are closed, as is Slaughter Pond Trail parking.

That's an odd area to get lost in. The trail from Coe north to North Brother is a very distinct cut swath through spruce/fir, hard to get off the trail except for the South Brother Spur, The former Marston Slide trail (brushed and grown in) and the North Brother Spur. Of course there is the Fort bushwack that definitely is an opportunity to get lost but unless the media reports are way off the hiker is lost south of North Brother.

At least the weather is ideal for a unexpected night in the woods.

That was my thought!

Given the age and experience, my WAG is a medical issue (e.g. stroke) leading to disorientation. peakbagger's right that this is the season to get stuck out and there's plenty of water in the area, so there's hope. Sounds like the type of guy who could be pretty bewildered and still manage to take care of himself based almost on muscle memory.
