The WM Guide mentions a west and east knob on Mt. Wolf and it looks like the map shows the west knob as the 3500’ peak. Which is considered the peak? Any canisters? Is the Gordon Pond trail interesting enough to make it a loop hike?

There used to be a register on the West peak, maybe 20-30 feet off the trail. Basically walk straight ahead, when heading south, where the trail makes a sharp turn to the left. Let me know if it's still there.

The Gordon Pond Trail is mostly a woods road/snowmobile trail, longer but easier walking than the AT. I'd do the loop if I had 2 cars but probably not if I had to hike the road.

Of course if you want the real shortest route, bushwhack up from Wildwood like I did one winter with Gene Daniell and Deane Morrison :) Their feeling was that since you couldn't count on finding the trail why walk the extra distance.

Mt. Wolf is on the Y-List.
If it is on the Y-List, doesn't that mean they are counting the E bump with the viewpoint as the summit? There is/was a register on one of the other bumps which is a short bushwhack off the AT.

Last year in June I went off trail a short distance to what looked like the highest point (west of the place where the outlook is). I did not find a canister, a jar, or any markers. But I occasionally miss things.

Wolf

After Wolf, you could bag Wolf cub or North Peak Blue Ridge, both have cannisters........just don't do it from Springer, like Neighbor.......He's crazy like that!!Could be a record for longest approach to Blue ridge!!!!!!!!!!!!!MJ

Thanks for the replies

bobandgeri :Thanks for your link, it will help with the planning.

dms: I shall look for a register.

cantdog: I have about a dozen left but I have two different lists (one includes S.Moosilauke and South Percy the other includes Big Attitash and Mt. Cube – which is correct?

RoySwkr: If I have two cars the loop sounds good but not if I have one!

MarkJ: I should have done it this week to see those crazy thru-hikers- will we find them in NH? ;)

Carole - if you can arrange a car spot, make it an overnight loop on the AT. After Mt. Wolf, Eliza Brook Shelter is a beautiful spot to spend the night, with a fine lean-to, quite a few tent locations, and a bubbling brook only yards away. The next day, enjoy Harrington Pond plus both Kinsman peaks then down by your route of choice.

FYI

If I'm not mistaken, there was a lot of mud in the Gordon Pond area & nearby trails when we were there last year-though it rained the day before.. Keep it in mind if your route includes that.

There was a lot of mud in sections - but we did it in mid-May so Spring Melt was still a factor. The stream crossing and waterfall was great!

Hey Carole!

I just happened to be on Wolf on Tuesday, took the little side trail to the viewpoint (rather hazy that day) and looked around for a cannister, but didn't find one. Neighbor whacked to the peak just south on the AT, but didn't find a cannister there either.

We came up from Kinsman Notch (AT) and yes, there were muddy areas along the way.

Have a great hike and tell any smelly, dirty AT hikers that we say "hi" :)

Thanks, folks.

Would that explain why there's no canister? No canisters on trailed peaks?

Didn't Stopher have a list like that, too?

I just noticed they have Clay and Boott Spur on the list, so they're using something less than 200 feet for the rise above the col. But not Franklin? It's virtually on the Crawford Path. It's certainly closer to a trail than the summit of Owl's Head Mountain is, which is on the list.

Y-Alpine list?

bobandgeri: This is the third version of the list I have seen. Where did you get your version? I looked for the list in the Y-Alpine Club site but didn’t find it. Mohamed has the list posted on his site. But this is what I’ve seen:

Mohamed’s list includes Moosilauke, South Peak (4523’), South Percy (3220’) and Mt. Shaw (2990’) and not Eastman (2939’), Big Attitash (2910’) or Cube (2909”)

bobandgeri’s list includes Moosilauke, South Peak; South Percy and Eastman and not Shaw, Big Attitash or Cube

a third list I had printed out but don’t know from where included Eastman, Big Attitash, and Cube and not Moosilauke, South Peak; South Percy or Shaw

Carol

Thank for the heads up! I just checked the Y-Alpine-Club on Yahoo and found that they updated the list in January of this year - there were some changes. I have replace the old list I had with the pdf file from their website which has there seal and contact info on it. This would be the official list as they publish the list and make there rules.

The list Julie sent me is the same as the list on Mohamed's site. That is the one I was originally going by. At least now we're all on the same list. ;)

Time for a few more versions? Their Cohas Trail checker left off Dixville Peak (3482) and S Baldhead (3110), both great view peaks. Other points they might include are Adams 4 (5355), Cannon Ball (3769), Three Sisters (3354), & Firescrew (3064). Then they might remove S Hancock (neither an official name nor 200' col), Owls Head Pemi (trail doesn't go either to named point or highest point according to the latest research), and Mt Davis (trail stops at viewpoint and doesn't go to named summit, AMC map is wrong).

Dixville Peak: (Cohos Trail) trail from south side of Dixville Notch, also reachable above Balsams ski area
S Baldhead: Cohos Trail from Gadwah Notch
Adams 4: just off Lowes Path
Cannon Ball: Kinsman Ridge Trail
Three Sisters (Chocorua): Middle Sister Trail (off Carter Ledge Tr)
Firescrew (Cardigan): I forget the trail name, but it's just north of Cardigan

edit: FYI, these are listed on Eric Savage's "T3000" list of trailed NH 3000+ peaks.
