REI 'scam'?

Gosh,

Had I not been closely following the discussion here, I may never have learned that REI is a scam. It's the same way I found out that the AMC is evil.

To think I could have been obliviously hiking AMC-maintained trails using AMC facilities, maps, and guides, all the while enjoying my quality REI gear with its discounts and dividends. How bad that would have been.

TRAMPER AL,
Look man we can all have our opinions, while Im sure your post was meant to be tongue and cheek, I stand by my experiences at REI, if you or others have had positive experiences, all the power to you. On another note since you brought it up, Im not a fan of the AMC either. While you relish their trails as most do, that is the reason most fall back on when speaking highly of the AMC. I have over the years tried a few of their programs, events ,shelters and such and do not care for them at all. I believe they are completety diselushioned at what is most needed by hikers or outdoor enthusiest, unless your wealthy, a yuppy or need people to be with. I could do without the trails, huts and such. Its funny, they have a deal with the forest service that gives them the land for the huts, they make and clear the trails and there you have it, people just fall into the AMC is great catagory. I like wild land, few people and I love cross country hiking. I know many others think differently and once again to each his own. Maybe thats why I feel so at home out west.

Just got a flyer in the mail from EMS - April 29-30 is 20% off everything in the store - not just one item, not just regularly priced items. Time to stock up!!!

in my personal exp - about half the folks at rei and ems are top notch and half don't know much - but hey - thats the deal I guess.

so half agree with sierra here. never one to shy from the ole amc debate - so....

totally agree with him on the amc issue - AMC in last couple of years has made me decide not to renew my membership with them. The highland center was the last straw for me. and the fact that I asked a question on a number of occasions and they never bothered to reply is another major reason. simple question was - why are the huts not open as self service in winter. asked via the phone and email and never got a reply.

the funny thing is - most of the folks I come in contact with feel the same. I think folks are fed up with the boston crowd running the show - not sure what the boston crowd is - but that is what I hear
People differ on views here - but... My $$ will go to the RMC next year.

Although I have baught gear at REI and EMS I went a different route this week. I just bought a pair of Vasque sundowner GTX boots from www.rwss.com I found them after doing a google search. They seem to have very good prices and free shipping. Right now they are giving away a free pair of hiking socks and sealant for any pair of boots bought from them. I will let you know how the rest of the transaction goes once I get my boots in the next few days :)

I just looked up on REI and the Sundowner GTX are going for 190 bucks where I just picked them up for 133.99 bucks :)
