thanks papa bear -for that photo and link

Thanks Jess - I know the zigzag and little zigzag canyons - did some hiking over that way last year before going to summit. Real nice area.

kind of bizzare all around, the dog, etc..

- over at summitpost, sounds like the locals are pretty ticked off about this and the entire MLU issue.

climbers are equipped with 2 sleeping bags, a tarp and perhaps most important an Emergency Locator Beacon. The conditions are keeping SAR from accessing them. Accordingly to searchers it's snowing 1 inch an hour and the winds are in excess of 70 MPH.
Glenn

most important? i'd rather have the sleeping bag and tarp than the beacon!! :) that was a cold night on the mtn.

Mt. Hood economy

I haven't been there in over 20 years but I would say the tourism percentage of the local economy in the south and east areas adjacent to the mountain is very, very high.
Without people playing on their mountain, including outsiders, there wouldn't be very much money there.

There are several big ski areas in that area. The one at Timberline is not large, but some of the others are. When the road (Rt 35) washed out last November (same White River) it was very bad news for skiiers.

I suspect the tourist $$ from skiiing is several orders of magnitude greater than from mountaineering.
